How to Claim PIP UK 2026: Eligibility, Rates & Application

Key facts (2026): Personal Independence Payment (PIP) is a tax-free benefit for people aged 16–66 with a long-term health condition or disability. The enhanced rate totals £737.20 per month in 2026 (daily living £108.55 + mobility £75.75 per week). You do not need to be in paid work to claim and your savings and income do not affect eligibility.

PIP is one of the most valuable and most underclaimed benefits in the UK. Many people with long-term physical or mental health conditions do not realise they qualify — PIP is based on how your condition affects your daily life, not on the diagnosis itself. If a condition affects your ability to carry out daily living activities or get around, you may be entitled to claim.

PIP Rates 2026

PIP has two components: Daily Living and Mobility. Each has a standard and enhanced rate. Daily Living — Standard: £72.65/week (£314.82/month); Enhanced: £108.55/week (£470.38/month). Mobility — Standard: £28.70/week (£124.37/month); Enhanced: £75.75/week (£328.25/month). Maximum combined (both enhanced): £184.30/week or £798.63/month. Note: always verify current rates at gov.uk as these are subject to annual uprating.

Who Qualifies for PIP?

You may qualify for PIP if you are aged 16–66 and have a physical or mental health condition or disability that affects your daily living or mobility, and the condition has lasted or is expected to last at least 12 months. There is no list of qualifying conditions — the assessment focuses on functional impact. Common conditions include MS, fibromyalgia, depression, anxiety, arthritis, diabetes, and many others.

How to Claim PIP

Start your claim by calling the DWP PIP claims line on 0800 917 2222. You will be sent a PIP2 form asking how your condition affects your daily life. Complete it with as much detail as possible — describe your worst days, not your best. You will then be invited to a consultation (face-to-face, telephone, or video) with a health professional. The DWP makes a decision based on the form and the consultation report. The process typically takes 12–20 weeks.

Our Verdict

PIP is worth up to £798.63 per month tax-free and is not means-tested. If you have a condition affecting your daily life or mobility, it is worth making a claim. The assessment process can be challenging — describe impact in detail on your worst days and consider getting support from Citizens Advice or a disability charity when completing the form. If you are refused, always appeal — a significant proportion of initial refusals are overturned at tribunal.
