What Counts as 'Needing Help'

You do not have to be currently receiving help — the test is whether you NEED it. Activities where needing help counts include: washing and bathing; dressing and undressing; using the toilet; preparing food; taking medication; walking/moving around; communicating with others; managing your condition (e.g. checking blood sugar if diabetic); and preventing danger to yourself (e.g. if you have falls or confusion). You are assessed by DWP on whether you need attention with these activities or supervision to keep you safe.

How to Apply for Attendance Allowance

Call the Attendance Allowance helpline: 0800 731 0122 (Monday-Friday, 8am-6pm) or download the form AA1 from gov.uk. Attendance Allowance cannot be claimed online. You must complete a written form describing how your conditions affect you on both good and bad days. Seek help completing the form from Age UK, Citizens Advice, or your local welfare rights service — research shows professional help significantly increases success rates. The form is long and detailed — allow 2-3 hours to complete it carefully.

KAELTRIPTON VERDICT
Attendance Allowance at up to £114.60/week for those who need both day and night help is one of the most valuable pension-age benefits — and one of the most underclaimed. Around 1.4 million more people are estimated to be eligible but not claiming. It is not means-tested, does not reduce other benefits, and can unlock additional Pension Credit and Council Tax Reduction. Apply via phone or paper form — not online.
