Benefits · April 2026

Personal Independence Payment (PIP) is the main disability benefit for working-age adults in the UK. It helps with the extra costs of living with a long-term health condition or disability. PIP rates increased by 3.8% from 6 April 2026, following the annual benefit uprating linked to September 2025 CPI inflation.

Who Qualifies for PIP?

PIP is available to people aged 16 to State Pension age who have a physical or mental health condition or disability that affects their daily living or mobility. You must have had the condition for at least 3 months and expect it to continue for at least 9 months (unless terminally ill). PIP is not means-tested — your income and savings do not affect eligibility.

The daily living component covers activities like preparing food, washing and bathing, dressing, communicating and managing medicines. The mobility component covers planning and following routes and moving around. Each activity is scored and points determine whether you receive the standard or enhanced rate.

PIP Assessment — What to Expect

After claiming PIP (online at gov.uk or by calling 0800 917 2222), you complete a 'How your disability affects you' form (PIP2). Most claimants then have an assessment by phone or video call with a healthcare professional from Capita or Serco. The assessor reviews your form and the assessment to recommend a PIP award to the DWP, who make the final decision.

💡 Describe your worst or most typical days on the PIP form — not your best days. If your condition fluctuates, describe how it affects you more than 50% of the time. Many successful PIP claims are strengthened by supporting evidence from GPs, specialists or occupational therapists. Always request a copy of the assessment report if your claim is rejected or you receive a lower award than expected.

PIP vs Universal Credit — What Is the Difference?

PIP and Universal Credit are completely separate benefits. PIP helps with the extra costs of disability and is not means-tested. Universal Credit is an income replacement benefit. You can receive both simultaneously — and receiving PIP may increase your Universal Credit through the disabled child or LCWRA elements.

⭐ OUR VERDICT

The 3.8% PIP increase from April 2026 provides meaningful additional support for around 3.9 million claimants. If you have a disability or health condition that affects your daily life or mobility and have not yet claimed PIP, it is worth applying — the benefit is not means-tested and the maximum award of £194.60/week is substantial. Get help completing the form from Citizens Advice, Scope or your local disability charity to maximise your chances of a successful claim.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much is PIP in 2026?

From 6 April 2026, PIP daily living rates are £114.60/week (enhanced) and £76.70/week (standard). Mobility rates are £80.00/week (enhanced) and £30.30/week (standard). You can receive both components, giving a maximum of £194.60/week for those on both enhanced rates.

How do I claim PIP?

Start a PIP claim by calling the DWP PIP claim line on 0800 917 2222 (Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm). You can also start a claim online at gov.uk/pip. You will then receive the PIP2 form to complete, followed by an assessment. The whole process typically takes 3-6 months.

Does having PIP affect other benefits?

PIP does not reduce other benefits. Receiving PIP can actually increase some other benefits — for example, receiving PIP daily living may qualify you for the disability premium in UC, and PIP enhanced mobility qualifies you for a Blue Badge and potentially the Motability scheme.

Can I get PIP for mental health conditions?

Yes. PIP is available for physical and mental health conditions. Conditions including depression, anxiety, PTSD, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and autism spectrum disorder can all qualify for PIP if they affect your daily living or mobility. The assessment considers the functional impact of your condition, not the diagnosis itself.
