Editor's note

Breakdown cover is one of the most consistently overpaid products in UK motoring. New customer prices are 40 to 60 percent cheaper than renewal prices at every major provider. The cheapest tier (Green Flag basic, from £25 per year) does not include home start or recovery; the practical sweet spot sits at £55 to £85 per year across the contractor-network providers.

The two big proprietary-fleet providers (AA, RAC) sit £40 to £80 per year above the contractor networks. For most urban drivers the premium does not pay off; for rural drivers and EV owners the proprietary fleet plus RAC EV Boost can be worth it.
