Cover Levels Explained
How to Avoid Overpaying at RenewalThe renewal trap: All breakdown providers quote new customers at 40-60% less than the renewal price. After year 1, your price jumps sharply. What to do when your renewal arrives: Get quotes from 3 competitors. Call your current provider with the best competitor quote and ask them to match it - they usually will. If they will not match, cancel and switch. Switching takes 2 minutes online. Haggling script: 'I have been a customer for X years and have a renewal quote of £Y. Competitor Z is offering me the same cover for £W. Can you match that?' Most providers will reduce by 20-40% when challenged. Cashback: Top cashback sites currently pay £5-£30 when you join a new provider - stack this on top of new customer pricing. Across the market, more than 90% of breakdown claims were accepted in 2024, and usage is frequent for both standalone and add-on policies. Source: FCA general insurance value measures data, calendar year 2025, vehicle breakdown products, latest reporting period per firm. The FCA publishes these measures in bands rather than exact figures; payout metrics are not reported for breakdown. Firms report under their regulated entity name, which can differ from the brand you buy from (for example, AA and RAC policies are underwritten by named insurers).
Why the rankings disagree
Which?, What Car? and price comparison sites rank providers differently because they measure different things. Which? uses member survey satisfaction; What Car? ranks speed and roadside repair success; comparison sites often sort by price. These are not regulator data. To read them, match the measure to your priority: speed, repair rate, satisfaction or price. Check the survey date and method, and confirm current details before buying.
Renewal pricing: the rule that does not protect you
Since January 2022, FCA rules stop insurers charging existing customers more than equivalent new customers for motor and home insurance. Standalone breakdown cover is not covered by that ban. Renewal quotes can therefore be far above new customer prices. Providers must send a renewal notice showing last year's price. Switching or asking for the new customer rate at renewal is common practice.
Before accepting a renewal, check the quoted price against the provider's current new customer price for the same cover. Compare the excess or call out fee, response times, roadside fix rate, claims acceptance and complaints. Prices change frequently, so confirm the entry price on the provider's own page on the date shown. If the renewal is higher, ask for the new customer rate or switch.
Questions drivers ask
Is RAC or AA better for breakdown cover?
Neither is better in all cases. Both run their own patrol fleets: the AA states over 2,500 patrols; the RAC over 1,600 patrol vans plus approved garages. Own fleets tend to fix more at the roadside. Rankings differ because surveys measure speed, repair rate, satisfaction or price. Check current cover details and prices for your needs.
Which breakdown cover is the most reliable?
Reliability is judged on response times, roadside fix rate, claims acceptance and complaints. The FCA value measures show more than 90% of breakdown claims were accepted in 2024. Which? named Recommended Providers in September 2026 from its member survey. What Car? rated AXA highest for roadside repair success at 82%. These are survey results, not regulator data.
Is Cover My Breakdown any good?
Cover My Breakdown is a UK broker style provider selling low cost breakdown policies underwritten by an insurer and fulfilled through a national contractor network. It is authorised and regulated by the FCA. Value is judged on the same measures as any provider: response times, roadside fix rate, claims acceptance and complaints, and the excess or call out fee.
Who do the main comparison sources recommend for breakdown cover?
Which? named its Recommended Providers for car breakdown cover in September 2026 from its member survey. What Car?'s December 2025 breakdown survey ranked AutoAid first for reaching stranded drivers quickest and rated AXA highest overall for roadside repair success at 82%. These are member and reader surveys, not regulator data, and rankings differ because they measure different things.
Does breakdown cover count as insurance?
Yes. UK breakdown cover is an insurance product regulated by the FCA. Complaints go to the Financial Ombudsman Service. It is sold by dedicated organisations such as the AA, RAC, Green Flag, Start Rescue, LV= Britannia Rescue and Cover My Breakdown, and as an add-on to car insurance and packaged bank accounts.
