The Earnings Limit — How It Works

The earnings limit is calculated on your net earnings after deductions. The following are deducted before assessing whether you are below the limit: income tax; National Insurance contributions; half of any pension contributions you make; and some work expenses (tools, uniforms, travel). Example: you earn £220/week gross. You pay £20 income tax and £10 NI = net £190. You contribute £20/week to a pension: 50% of £20 = £10 deduction. Adjusted earnings: £190 − £10 = £180. As this is below £204, you can still receive Carer's Allowance.

Carer's Allowance and the Carer's Allowance Supplement

In Scotland, carers who receive Carer's Allowance also receive the Carer's Allowance Supplement — an additional payment made twice a year. The supplement for 2026 is confirmed by Social Security Scotland. Check mygov.scot for the current supplement amount. The supplement is not available in England, Wales or Northern Ireland.

Carer's Allowance and UC — The Overlapping Benefits Rule

An important complexity: Carer's Allowance cannot normally be paid in full at the same time as other overlapping benefits such as the State Pension or contributory ESA. If you receive the State Pension (£241.30/week in 2026), you cannot receive Carer's Allowance on top — whichever is higher is paid, and you receive the difference only if Carer's Allowance is higher. However, you still qualify as a carer and can receive the UC Carer Element (£198.31/month) and the Carer's Premium on means-tested benefits.

KAELTRIPTON VERDICT
Carer's Allowance at £86.45/week (DWP confirmed April 2026) is vital income for the UK's 6.5 million unpaid carers. The earnings limit of ~£204/week allows for part-time work. If you receive the State Pension or contributory ESA, check whether the overlapping benefits rule affects you — you may still qualify for carer premiums even if you can't receive Carer's Allowance itself. Always check with Citizens Advice.
