From September 2025, repayments can be made automatically through PAYE — check your HMRC account to set this up and avoid a self-assessment return. Why You Should Always Claim Child BenefitEven if you earn above £80,000 and will repay 100% of the benefit, claim it anyway. Here's why: National Insurance credits: Child Benefit automatically gives you NI credits for each year you receive it. These count towards your State Pension qualification. You need 35 qualifying years for the full new State Pension (£241.30/week). A gap in your NI record can reduce your State Pension by up to £6.89/week permanently. Non-working parent protection: If one parent is not working and caring for children, their NI record would otherwise have gaps. Child Benefit NI credits protect their State Pension entitlement. Opt out of cash payment but keep the NI credits by registering your claim. How to Claim Child BenefitClaim as soon as possible after your child is born or comes to live with you — Child Benefit can only be backdated 3 months. You can claim online via the HMRC app (the quickest method) or at gov.uk/child-benefit. You will need: your National Insurance number; your child's birth certificate or adoption certificate; your bank account details. HMRC processes claims within 3 days via the app, or up to 12 weeks by post. Child Benefit is usually paid every 4 weeks directly into your bank account. Single parents or those on certain benefits can request weekly payments. Two-Child Limit Removal and Child BenefitNote: the two-child limit (removed April 2026) removal from April 2026 applies to Universal Credit child elements, NOT to Child Benefit. Child Benefit has no limit — you receive it for every child regardless of family size. If you have three or more children and receive Universal Credit, you may now also receive Universal Credit child elements for all children, in addition to Child Benefit for all children.
