The Companion Voucher -- When It Is Worth the Annual Fee

The BA Amex Premium Plus card (300 pounds per year) includes a 2-for-1 companion voucher when you spend 15,000 pounds in the anniversary year. A second passenger travels on the same Avios booking paying taxes only. On a business class flight to the USA this can be worth 1,000-2,000 pounds -- making the 300 pound annual fee excellent value for regular business class travellers. Tip

The companion voucher is only worth collecting if you will actually use it on a qualifying flight. It expires 12 months after issue. If you cannot use business class, a no-fee Avios card usually provides better net value after the annual fee.

Maximising Airline Card Value
  • Use the card for all everyday spending -- supermarkets, utilities, subscriptions
  • Pay the balance in full every month -- interest wipes out all rewards value
  • Add supplementary cardholders to pool points from two incomes
  • Book flights directly through the airline for double or bonus points
  • Trigger the companion voucher threshold before the anniversary date -- diarise it
  • Redeem for business or first class -- this is where the value is highest

Important

Never carry a balance on a rewards credit card. The interest rate (typically 20-30% APR) will cost more than the rewards earned within a single billing cycle.

Yes. Household members at the same address can pool Avios free of charge via the Household Account feature in the BA Executive Club.
