Universal Credit Rates April 2026: New Amounts & What Changed

By Chandraketu Tripathi · Updated April 2026 · Fact-checked

Benefits · April 2026

Universal Credit rates increased from 6 April 2026 as part of the annual benefit uprating. Unlike most benefits which rose by 3.8% (September 2025 CPI), Universal Credit standard allowances received an additional uplift of 2.3% under the Universal Credit Act 2025 — bringing the total increase to approximately 6.1%. However, a major cut to the health element for new claimants also took effect simultaneously.

UC Standard AllowanceOld rate (2025/26)New rate (2026/27)Change
Single under 25£316.98/month£338.58/month+£21.60/month
Single 25 or over£400.14/month£424.90/month+£24.76/month
Couple both under 25£497.55/month£528.34/month+£30.79/month
Couple one/both 25+£628.10/month£666.97/month+£38.87/month

Child Element — Two-Child Limit Removed

One of the most significant changes from 6 April 2026 is the removal of the two-child limit on Universal Credit. Previously, families could only receive the child element for a maximum of two children (born after April 2017). From April 2026, families with three or more children receive the child element for every child — a major boost for larger families.

Child elementRate 2026/27
First child (born before 6 April 2017)£351.88/month
First/subsequent child (born on/after 6 April 2017)£303.94/month
Disabled child lower rate addition£164.79/month
Disabled child higher rate addition£514.71/month

LCWRA Element — Major Cut for New Claimants

The Limited Capability for Work and Work-Related Activity (LCWRA) element — paid to UC claimants with disabilities or health conditions that prevent them working — was cut approximately in half for new claimants from April 2026. New claimants receive £217.26/month instead of the previous £423.27/month. Existing claimants (whose claims started before 6 April 2026) are protected and receive £429.80/month (the old rate plus inflation uplift).

💡 If you have a health condition and are making a new UC claim, ensure you submit any fit notes before 6 April 2026 to potentially fall under the protected rate. The cut is significant — new claimants receive £206 less per month than those on the protected rate for the same health conditions.

⭐ OUR VERDICT

The April 2026 UC uprating is a mixed picture. The above-inflation increase to standard allowances is genuinely helpful for millions of claimants. The removal of the two-child limit is a significant win for larger families. However, the halving of the LCWRA element for new disabled claimants is a major cut that will leave new claimants significantly worse off than those who claimed before April 2026. Check your award letter carefully and contact Citizens Advice if you believe your payment is incorrect.
