| Free Credit Report — Key Facts | |
|---|---|
| Legal right | Free under UK GDPR Article 15 (subject access) and Consumer Credit Act 1974 |
| Three CRAs | Experian, Equifax, TransUnion — each holds different data; check all three |
| Soft search only | Checking your own report has no impact on your credit score |
| Dispute deadline | CRAs must investigate and respond within 28 days (UK GDPR Article 19) |
| Retention period | Most information stays on file for 6 years from the relevant date |
| Paid tiers | Add monitoring alerts but the underlying data is identical to free reports |
Every UK resident has a legal right under UK GDPR Article 15 to obtain a free copy of their personal data from all three credit reference agencies. You should check all three — lenders report to different agencies and your file at each will differ.
How to Get Each Free Report
| CRA | Free route | Paid upgrade (optional) | What free gives you |
|---|---|---|---|
| Experian | experian.co.uk — free account | CreditExpert £14.99/mo for monitoring alerts | Full report; score; 30-day refresh |
| Equifax | ClearScore (clearscore.com) — no card required | ClearScore Plus adds ID monitoring | Full Equifax data; score; weekly refresh |
| TransUnion | Credit Karma (creditkarma.co.uk) — free | No paid tier | Full TransUnion data; score; weekly refresh |
| 💡 Tip: ClearScore for Equifax and Credit Karma for TransUnion are both completely free and never require a credit card. Experian free tier gives full access to your Experian file. |
What Your Credit Report Contains
Each report contains: personal details (name, date of birth, addresses for past 6 years); electoral roll status; financial accounts (credit cards, loans, mortgages, overdrafts — date opened, limit, balance, payment history); public records (CCJs, insolvency, bankruptcy); hard and soft searches; and financial associations (people linked via joint accounts).
What to Check — A Checklist
| Section | What to check | Red flag |
|---|---|---|
| Personal details | Name and all address history correct | Wrong address can indicate identity fraud |
| Electoral roll | Registered at current address | Not registered reduces your score |
| Accounts | All accounts recognisable | Unrecognised account requires immediate investigation |
| Payment history | All shown as on time | Any late or missed marker must be investigated |
| Defaults | Removed 6 years after default date | Default older than 6 years must be removed |
| CCJs | Removed 6 years after judgment date | Satisfied CCJ stays 6 years but shows as satisfied |
| Searches | Only hard searches you authorised | Unauthorised hard search indicates potential fraud |
| Financial associations | Only current joint account holders | Ex-partner links must be removed via disassociation |
How to Dispute an Error
Under UK GDPR Article 19, CRAs must correct inaccurate data without undue delay and inform you of the outcome. Use the CRA secure messaging system or submit a formal dispute. The CRA has 28 days to investigate. If confirmed inaccurate, they must correct it and notify every lender who received the incorrect data in the past 6 months. (Source: ICO — Right to Rectification)
If the CRA sides with the lender: raise a complaint with the ICO at ico.org.uk; or complain to the Financial Ombudsman Service if the data was provided by an FCA-authorised lender under a regulated credit agreement.
Removing Financial Associations
A financial association is created by a joint account, joint credit application, or named additional cardholder status. It links your credit file to the other person. To remove: close all joint accounts, then submit a Notice of Disassociation to each CRA showing the link. The CRA investigates and removes it if no current financial connection exists. Are Paid Monitoring Services Worth It?
Paid services add real-time alerts, dark web monitoring and identity theft insurance. The underlying data is identical to free tiers. Paid monitoring is worth considering if: you have previously been a victim of identity fraud; you are planning a major credit application in the next 6 months; or you want automated alerts rather than monthly checks.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why are my scores different on each CRA?
Each CRA uses a different scoring model and scale (Experian 0-999, Equifax 0-1000, TransUnion 0-710). Not all lenders report to all three agencies. The scores are not directly comparable — what matters is the underlying data on each report.
Can I see which lenders searched my file?
Yes. Your report shows all hard searches by name, date and type. Soft searches (your own checks, pre-approval checks) are visible only to you — not to other lenders and they do not affect your score.
