What Is an Index Fund UK? Beginner Investing Guide 2026

Investing Guide — April 2026

An index fund is an investment fund that tracks a specific stock market index — such as the FTSE 100 the S&P 500 or the MSCI World — by holding all or most of the companies in that index. Rather than paying a fund manager to pick stocks you simply buy the whole market at very low cost.

How an Index Fund Works

If you invest in a FTSE 100 index fund your money is spread across all 100 companies on the London Stock Exchange in proportion to their size. The fund automatically rebalances when companies enter or leave the index.

Why Index Funds Beat Most Active Funds

Decades of data show the majority of actively managed funds underperform their benchmark index after charges. S&P data shows that over 15 years more than 85% of active UK funds underperformed their index benchmark.

Index Fund vs ETF — Which Should You Choose?

Both are very similar. ETFs trade throughout the day like shares while index funds are priced once daily. For most long-term investors holding in an ISA the choice makes little difference. Index funds are slightly easier for setting up regular monthly contributions.

How to Invest in Index Funds UK

  • Open a Stocks and Shares ISA for tax-free growth
  • Choose a low-cost platform — Vanguard direct is cheapest for their own funds
  • Pick a globally diversified fund with OCF under 0.20%
  • Set up a monthly direct debit — even £50 per month compounds significantly over time
  • Do not check the price daily — stay invested through ups and downs

Bottom line: For most UK investors starting out a low-cost global index fund held inside a Stocks and Shares ISA is the single best investment decision you can make. Start with a globally diversified fund at under 0.20% OCF and contribute monthly. Time in the market beats timing the market.
