Delivery Driver Insurance UK 2026: What You Need for Uber Eats, Deliveroo and Amazon

By Chandraketu Tripathi  |  Updated April 2026
If you deliver food, parcels or any goods for payment — whether for Uber Eats, Deliveroo, Amazon Flex, DPD, Hermes or any other platform — your standard car insurance is invalid the moment you start working. You need “hire and reward” cover, either as an add-on to your existing policy or as a standalone policy. Driving without it is illegal and puts every claim at risk.
Verdict 2026
Standard car insurance: invalid for paid delivery work  |  Required cover: Hire and Reward (H&R)  |  Cost: £800–£2,500+/year  |  Cheapest option: flexible short-term apps (Zego, Bolt, Ripe)

Why Standard Car Insurance Does Not Cover Delivery Work

Standard car insurance policies cover Social, Domestic and Pleasure (SDP) use and sometimes business use — but “business use” covers driving for your employer or to multiple work sites. It does not cover driving for hire or reward — i.e. being paid per delivery. The moment you accept a delivery job for payment, you are driving for hire and reward, and your standard policy is void.

Classes of Car Insurance Use

SDP (Social, Domestic & Pleasure)Personal trips, shopping, commuting to one place of workAny work use; delivery; carrying goods for payment
SDP + Business use class 1SDP + driving to multiple work sites for your employerDelivery; carrying goods for payment; self-employed courier work
SDP + Business use class 2Class 1 + named driver business useDelivery for payment
Hire and Reward (H&R)All of the above PLUS carrying goods or passengers for paymentNothing — this is the correct class for delivery drivers

Platform cover gap: Uber Eats and Deliveroo typically provide third-party cover while you are active on the platform. They do NOT cover you when travelling to collect an order, between deliveries, or on the way home. You need your own H&R policy to cover these gaps.

Amazon Flex: What Insurance Do You Need?

Amazon Flex is a self-employed delivery programme. Amazon provides third-party insurance while you are actively delivering, but this does not include comprehensive cover or cover for your vehicle’s own damage. Most Amazon Flex drivers take out a pay-as-you-go H&R policy for the hours they work. Zego is the most widely used provider among Flex drivers.

Verdict 2026
If you do any paid delivery work — food, parcels, Amazon Flex — your standard car insurance is invalid. You need Hire and Reward cover. Annual policies cost £800–2,500+/year. For part-time or occasional work, pay-as-you-go H&R from Zego starts from around £0.60/hour. Platform insurance has significant gaps — always check what it covers and when.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need special insurance to deliver for Uber Eats?
Yes. Standard car insurance does not cover paid delivery work. You need Hire and Reward insurance. Uber Eats provides some third-party cover while you are active on the platform, but there are significant gaps when travelling to collect orders and between deliveries. Most drivers supplement with a pay-as-you-go H&R policy.
Is delivery driving covered by business car insurance?
No. Standard business car insurance covers driving to multiple work sites for your employer — it does not cover being paid to carry goods. You specifically need Hire and Reward cover.
What is the cheapest delivery driver insurance UK?
Pay-as-you-go providers like Zego offer H&R cover from around £0.60–1.50 per hour worked, making it the cheapest option for part-time delivery drivers. Full-time drivers usually save money with an annual policy.
