Wondering how your savings compare? You're not alone. Here's the definitive breakdown of average UK savings by age in 2026 — and honest benchmarks for how much you should actually aim for. Updated April 2026

Source: Finder.com 2026 survey of 2,000 UK adults, January 2026; Tembo Money; NatWest Savings Index 2026. Note: averages are skewed upward by high savers — the median gives a more realistic picture of typical savings.

How Much Should You Have Saved by Age?

AgeFidelity GuidelineWhat That Means (£30k salary)What That Means (£50k salary)
301x annual salary£30,000£50,000
403x annual salary£90,000£150,000
506x annual salary£180,000£300,000
608x annual salary£240,000£400,000
67 (retirement)10x annual salary£300,000£500,000

These are ambitious guidelines from Fidelity that include pension savings. Most people fall significantly short — and that's okay. The key is having a clear target and a plan. Even starting at 40 with nothing saved can lead to a decent retirement income if you save aggressively from that point.

The UK Savings Gap by Gender

Men have significantly more in savings than women. According to Finder's 2026 data, the average man has £23,912 in savings versus £14,464 for the average woman — a gap of nearly £10,000. Women are also less likely to have any savings at all: 81% of men have some savings versus 66% of women. This mirrors the gender pay gap and the impact of career breaks for childcare.

Average Monthly Savings in the UK

According to NatWest's 2026 Savings Index, the average UK adult saves £288/month — up from £226 the previous year. Londoners save the most (£364.80/month) while Sheffield residents save the least (£231/month). One in ten (10%) UK adults plan to save nothing at all in 2026.

Why Averages Can Be Misleading

The average savings figure of £19,214 is heavily skewed by the over-55s, who have accumulated savings over decades. If you're 30 with £5,000 saved, you're not doing as badly as those numbers might make you feel — 60% of 18-34 year olds have less than £1,000 in savings. The important thing is building the habit, not comparing yourself to an average that includes people 30 years further along in their financial journey.

KAELTRIPTON VERDICT
The average UK adult has £19,214 in savings but the median is just £9,633 — meaning half of all adults have less than that. Don't be discouraged by averages skewed by older, wealthier savers. Focus on building an emergency fund of 3-6 months of expenses first, then target long-term saving.
