An NHS Prescription Prepayment Certificate (PPC) is a pre-payment scheme that covers all your NHS prescriptions in England for a flat fee — no matter how many items you collect. With each prescription item costing £9.90 in 2026-27, anyone collecting 4 or more items in 3 months, or 12 or more in a year, saves money. The NHS BSA estimates PPC holders saved nearly £500 million on prescription costs in 2024-25.
Key Facts
3-month PPC: £32.05 (saves money if you collect 4+ items in 3 months)  |  12-month PPC: £114.50 (saves money if you collect 12+ items in a year)  |  HRT PPC: £19.80 for 12 months  |  Per item charge: £9.90  |  Apply: nhsbsa.nhs.uk/ppc

The £500 Million Saving: Why More People Should Have a PPC

The NHS Business Services Authority estimated that 3.4 million PPC holders could have saved nearly £500 million on prescription costs in 2024-25. Despite this, analysis shows that some patients are still paying more in individual prescription charges than the annual cost of a PPC — meaning they would save money by switching to a PPC but have not done so. If you regularly collect 2 or more prescription items per month, a 12-month PPC almost certainly saves you money.
