★ KEY TAKEAWAY

UK visa English language requirements run from CEFR A1 for initial Spouse entry to B2 for Skilled Worker, via A2 Spouse extension and B1 ILR. Four UKVI-approved SELT providers operate: IELTS UKVI, Trinity College London, LanguageCert, and Pearson PTE Academic UKVI. Test certificates are valid for 2 years.

UK visa English language requirements sit alongside financial evidence and route-specific eligibility as one of the three universal tests that cut across work, study, family, and settlement applications, and they are governed by Appendix English Language of the Immigration Rules on gov.uk. The Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) anchors the level scale from A1 beginner through B2 upper-intermediate, and the route-by-route level requirement determines which Secure English Language Test (SELT) certificate or alternative evidence satisfies the rule. Four approved SELT providers currently operate in the 2026 framework: IELTS for UKVI run by the British Council and IDP IELTS, Trinity College London Integrated Skills in English, LanguageCert International ESOL, and Pearson PTE Academic UKVI. Each provider publishes its score-to-CEFR conversion and UKVI maintains the official list of accepted tests on gov.uk. Exemptions apply for nationals of majority English-speaking countries, holders of UK degrees, and applicants aged 65+ or with medical exemption. Understanding which test, which score, which route, and which exemption path applies prevents one of the most common procedural refusal grounds.

What CEFR level does each route require?

Skilled Worker applicants must evidence CEFR B1 in all four skills (reading, writing, speaking, listening), per paragraph ENG 3.1 of Appendix English Language on gov.uk. Student route applicants at degree level or above must evidence CEFR B2, with below-degree level courses requiring B1. The Spouse route escalates across the 5-year qualifying period: A1 for entry clearance, A2 for the 30-month extension, and B1 at ILR.

Global Talent applicants do not face a separate English language test at the endorsement stage, because the endorsing bodies are assumed to assess communication competence through the substantive review. At settlement, however, Global Talent applicants must meet B1 like any other ILR applicant, so the English requirement attaches at a later stage rather than a free pass on the route.

Who are the four approved SELT providers?

UKVI currently approves four Secure English Language Test providers, per the Secure English Language Test list published on gov.uk: IELTS for UKVI delivered by the British Council and IDP IELTS, Trinity College London with its Integrated Skills in English (ISE) and Graded Examinations in Spoken English (GESE) suites, LanguageCert International ESOL, and Pearson PTE Academic UKVI. Each provider operates a network of approved test centres globally and in the UK.

Applicants must book their SELT through the provider directly, select the UKVI-branded test rather than the general academic or professional version, and attend a test centre on the UKVI approved list. Results are issued within 5 to 13 days depending on provider, and UKVI verifies results directly with the provider via the test reference number on the application, so forged certificates are detected at application review.

How long is a SELT certificate valid?

A SELT certificate is valid for 2 years from the test date for use in new UK visa applications, per paragraph ENG 7 of Appendix English Language. Where an applicant has already used a SELT to support a previous visa application, the same certificate can usually be re-used for subsequent applications without re-testing, provided the underlying level requirement has not increased.

A Spouse applicant who passed A1 at entry clearance can use that same certificate as proof that A1 was once met, but must take a fresh A2 test for the 30-month extension and a fresh B1 test for ILR. Skilled Worker applicants who passed B1 at initial entry can re-use the same certificate for in-country extensions and for SET(O) settlement at 5 years, provided settlement is applied for before the test certificate would expire (not all certificates expire within 2 years for this continued-use purpose, per the Appendix English Language re-use rule).

Which applicants are exempt from SELT?

Nationals of majority English-speaking countries listed in paragraph ENG 4.1 of Appendix English Language are exempt from SELT, including applicants from the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, Malta, St Kitts and Nevis, St Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines, and Trinidad and Tobago.

Applicants who hold a degree taught and assessed in English from a qualifying institution can use that degree as evidence, provided UK NARIC or Ecctis confirms the degree was taught in English and is equivalent to a UK bachelor's, master's, or doctoral level. Applicants aged 65 or above at the date of application are exempt from SELT on ILR and citizenship applications, as are applicants with a long-term physical or mental condition that would prevent them from meeting the requirement, subject to medical evidence.

How do the four providers compare?

ProviderTest nameSkills coveredTypical turnaround
British Council / IDPIELTS for UKVIAll four skills13 days
Trinity College LondonISE / GESEAll four (ISE) / speaking-listening (GESE)7-10 days
LanguageCertInternational ESOLAll four skills5-7 days
PearsonPTE Academic UKVIAll four skills5 days

IELTS UKVI remains the most widely booked SELT globally, with the largest test centre network. Pearson PTE Academic UKVI is entirely computer-based with fast turnaround. Trinity GESE is speaking and listening only, so Spouse A1 and A2 applicants often choose Trinity for its narrower scope. LanguageCert has grown materially since entering the UKVI list in 2020.

What does the test typically cost?

Test fees are set by providers, not by UKVI. IELTS UKVI fees typically sit in the £200 to £250 range per sitting. Trinity GESE and ISE are priced below £150 for lower levels and up to £200 for higher levels. LanguageCert and Pearson PTE Academic UKVI fall in similar bands to IELTS. Providers publish current pricing on their own websites.

Retake fees are equal to fresh booking fees, and there is no cap on retakes. Results are recorded against the applicant's biometric data at the test centre, so test-taking by proxy is detected at UKVI review. Certificate retrieval costs are generally zero, as results are issued digitally and verifiable through the provider portal.

What volume data do SELT providers publish?

IELTS publishes annual test-taker statistics through the British Council that include UKVI test volumes globally, though granular breakdowns by CEFR level and country are not always disclosed. The British Council annual report is a useful secondary reference for aggregate patterns, as is the IDP IELTS annual investor communication.

Trinity College London, LanguageCert, and Pearson publish lighter volume data in provider press releases and industry reports. UKVI does not publish SELT volume data directly, because the tests are commercial products operated under contract rather than Home Office services. Applicants choosing between providers should weight by test centre availability in their country rather than chasing volume data.

Applicants preparing for SELT should factor in practical logistics alongside the test choice itself. Test centre travel, appointment availability, and certificate delivery timing all affect whether the SELT can be booked, passed, and evidenced within the visa submission window. Students applying in August for an October course start should book a SELT in late June or early July to leave re-sit capacity. Skilled Worker applicants whose CoS assignment is imminent should book a SELT before CoS issuance, because a failed test can delay the application past CoS validity. Planning the test window is often as important as the test preparation itself.

★ EDITOR'S VERDICT

The UK visa English language framework is rigidly CEFR-indexed, so preparation should be level-targeted rather than provider-driven. Skilled Worker applicants need B1, Student degree applicants need B2, Spouse applicants climb A1 to A2 to B1 across the 5-year route to ILR. Nationals of majority English-speaking countries and UK degree holders are exempt. Choose the provider whose test centre network is closest and whose turnaround matches the application timeline. Keep certificates on file for 2 years, and remember that the same certificate can often serve multiple subsequent applications within its validity window.

Frequently asked questions

Does general IELTS count for a UK visa?

No. The test must be IELTS for UKVI specifically, booked through approved UKVI test centres. Regular IELTS Academic or General does not meet Appendix English Language requirements.

Can I reuse my SELT certificate for citizenship?

Yes, provided the B1 level requirement is met. The same certificate used at ILR typically supports citizenship, subject to the Home Office confirming the test result has not aged out of reusability.

What happens if I fail my SELT?

Retake at the same or different provider. There is no penalty on future applications for SELT retakes. UKVI looks at the final passing certificate, not the history of attempts.

Does a UK Bachelor's degree exempt me?

Yes, provided the degree was taught and assessed in English. Confirmation from Ecctis (formerly UK NARIC) is required for non-UK degrees. A UK-awarded degree automatically meets the requirement.

Can I sit the test online?

No. UKVI-approved SELTs must be taken at an approved physical test centre. Remote-proctored versions of regular IELTS, Pearson, or LanguageCert are not accepted for UK visa purposes.

Are there age exemptions?

Yes. Applicants aged 65 or above at the date of ILR or citizenship application are exempt from the English requirement. Spouse route applicants do not have an age exemption, so the age rule is concentrated at settlement stage.

Does the test cover writing and reading for Spouse visas?

No. Spouse A1 and A2 levels test speaking and listening only, per Appendix English Language. Trinity GESE is a popular Spouse choice because it covers only those skills.
