What is Starling Bank?

Starling Bank is a fully licensed UK digital bank, founded in 2014 by Anne Boden. It received its banking licence in 2016 and is regulated by both the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) and the Prudential Regulation Authority (PRA). Deposits are protected by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS) up to £120,000 across all Starling accounts.

Headquartered in London with offices in Cardiff and Southampton, Starling reached profitability in 2021 - a milestone that has eluded most digital banking competitors. As of 2026, it has over 4 million personal customers and over 500,000 business accounts, making it the UK's leading digital bank for small businesses.

Starling has won more banking awards than any other UK digital bank: Which? Recommended Provider for multiple consecutive years; Best British Bank at the British Bank Awards five years running. Customer count and awards alone do not tell the full story - this review covers whether Starling delivers in daily use and how it compares to Monzo, Revolut, and high street alternatives.

Personal current account

Starling's personal current account is free with no monthly fee and no minimum balance. It is a genuine full-service current account, not a stripped-down digital product.

Key features include: full UK current account with sort code and account number; Mastercard debit card with instant freeze and unfreeze in the app; fee-free spending abroad at Mastercard exchange rate with no markup; free ATM withdrawals in the UK with no daily limit beyond your balance; cheque imaging (deposit cheques via the app - Monzo and Revolut both lack this); free cash deposits at Post Office branches up to £10,000 per day; joint accounts; children's debit cards (Kite); 24/7 UK-based customer support by phone and in-app chat.

Note: Starling removed the interest rate on current account balances in February 2025. No interest is earned on cash held in the main current account. Use the Easy Saver or Fixed Saver for interest-bearing balances.

Starling's personal account has no premium or paid tier. All features are included on the free account with no restrictions.

Savings accounts

Starling offers three dedicated savings products, all accessible within the Spaces section of the app. A Starling personal current account is required to open any of them.

Easy Saver: 3.00% AER variable, instant access, no minimum deposit, up to £1 million. Interest calculated daily and paid on the first of each month. Multiple Easy Saver Spaces can be held simultaneously, allowing savings to be split by goal.

Fixed Saver: 3.70% AER/gross, 12-month fixed term, minimum £2,000, up to £1 million. Funds are locked for the full term with no access. Interest is calculated daily and paid at maturity. Multiple Fixed Savers can be held at once.

Cash ISA: 2.5% AER variable, instant access, tax-free. Unlimited penalty-free withdrawals within each tax year. Transfers in from other Cash ISAs are accepted. Interest calculated daily and paid monthly.

All three products are FSCS-protected up to £120,000 across all Starling accounts. Rates are correct as of June 2026 - verify current rates at starlingbank.com before opening.

Overdraft

Starling offers arranged overdrafts of up to £5,000 on personal accounts, subject to eligibility and credit assessment. Interest is charged at 15%, 25%, or 35% EAR variable depending on the applicant's credit score. The representative APR is 15% variable. Interest accrues daily and is charged on the 15th of the following month.

There are no unarranged overdraft fees. Starling declines payments that would take you over your limit rather than allowing them and charging fees - making overdraft costs transparent and predictable.

For comparison: Barclays and HSBC charge up to 39% EAR on overdrafts. Monzo's representative rate is also 39% EAR at the higher end.

Business banking

Starling's business current account is free for sole traders, limited companies (LTDs), and limited liability partnerships (LLPs). There are no monthly fees and no domestic transfer fees. FSCS protection applies up to £120,000.

Accounting integrations via Open Banking: Xero, QuickBooks, and FreeAgent sync automatically. There is no direct Sage bank feed - businesses using Sage should consider alternatives. A Business Toolkit add-on at £7/month adds invoicing and receipt capture.

Business overdrafts are available between £1,000 and £50,000 at 15% EAR variable, subject to eligibility. Business loans from £25,001 to £250,000 are available for LTDs and LLPs.

How Starling compares

Starling is best for: anyone who wants a complete, fee-free current account that can fully replace a traditional bank account, with strong business banking, excellent customer service, cheque imaging, and full FSCS protection.

Monzo is best for: budgeting tools and younger users. Monzo's spending analysis is more detailed and actionable. Monzo Flex offers integrated credit options Starling lacks.

Revolut is best for: international use and the widest product range including crypto and stock trading.

A practical combination: use Starling as a main UK account and Revolut as a travel and multi-currency account. Both offer free tiers - costs nothing and covers most use cases.

Security and regulation

Starling is regulated by the FCA (FRN 730166) and PRA and holds a full UK banking licence. Security features include biometric login, instant card freeze and unfreeze, real-time transaction notifications, and in-app gambling block.

Deposits are protected by the FSCS up to £120,000 across all Starling accounts. This figure covers the total across personal, joint, savings, and business accounts held with Starling Bank Limited.
