What HSBC currently offers, and what it does not
Anyone searching for HSBC mobile phone insurance in 2026 will not find a product to buy. HSBC's own insurance products page, which lists every policy currently on sale, covers buildings and contents insurance, life cover, critical illness cover, and two travel insurance products, Premier Worldwide Travel Insurance and the legacy Insurance Aspects policy for existing holders. Mobile phone insurance does not appear on that list at all. HSBC's flagship packaged account, Premier, which requires an individual annual income of £100,000 or more, or savings and investments of £100,000 or more with HSBC, includes worldwide travel insurance underwritten by Aviva Insurance Limited alongside health and lifestyle benefits, but phone cover is not part of the package. This puts HSBC in a different position to Lloyds, NatWest and Halifax, all of which bundle mobile phone insurance into at least one current packaged account.
What happened to Select and Cover
HSBC previously ran a flexible subscription product called Select and Cover, launched in 2019, which let customers mix and match from seven types of cover, including mobile phone and gadget insurance, for a monthly fee starting at £19.50 for three options and rising to £45.50 for all seven. The mobile phone element of Select and Cover was underwritten by Aviva and, according to HSBC's own past figures, was the single most-used option in the bundle, taken up by the large majority of subscribers. Select and Cover no longer appears among HSBC's current insurance products, and its dedicated product page now redirects back to the general insurance overview, indicating the product has been withdrawn rather than simply renamed. Anyone who signed up while it was available should check their own account documents or contact HSBC directly to confirm whether their cover is still active, since this guide reflects what HSBC currently offers to new customers rather than the status of any individual existing policy.
Legacy cover for existing HSBC Advance customers
The one route by which an HSBC customer still has mobile phone insurance today is through Insurance Aspects, a packaged product tied to the HSBC Advance account that HSBC states is currently not available for new customers to purchase. Existing holders keep their cover, which includes worldwide protection against loss, theft, breakdown outside of the manufacturer's warranty, and accidental damage, for the policyholder, any joint account holder, and anyone using the phone with the policyholder's permission. Cover began from the date the customer became an Insurance Aspects holder, or 1 November 2018, whichever is later, and continues until the policy is cancelled or the customer stops paying the underlying HSBC Advance account fee. Only the phone's own battery and chargers are covered as accessories if lost, damaged or stolen in the same incident; other accessories are excluded.
Excess, claim limits and how to claim
Under the legacy Insurance Aspects policy, the excess is £50 if the phone is repaired and £75 if it is replaced, with a maximum of two claims per Insurance Aspects holder allowed in a policy year. Claims are handled by calling HSBC's dedicated claims line, and the phone's IMEI number, found by dialling *#06# on the handset, is required to process a claim. As with other bank-linked phone insurance, registering a phone in advance is recommended to speed up the process, though existing holders are automatically covered regardless of registration. Anyone whose claim under this or another provider's policy is turned down should read the guide on what to do when a phone insurance claim is rejected, which sets out the standard escalation routes, including the Financial Ombudsman Service.
What HSBC customers without cover should do instead
Anyone banking with HSBC today who wants phone insurance needs to look outside their current account, since neither Premier nor any of HSBC's on-sale packaged accounts bundle it in, and Select and Cover is no longer available to new subscribers. The practical options are a standalone mobile phone insurance policy bought directly from an insurer, cover through a mobile network provider, or, in some cases, an extension added to an existing home contents insurance policy, which the separate guide on whether home insurance covers mobile phones covers in detail. For a full market comparison of standalone providers, see the best mobile phone insurance in the UK hub, and for how HSBC's position compares with banks that do bundle phone cover, the guide to packaged bank account phone insurance compared sets out Lloyds, Halifax and Nationwide's current terms side by side.
