Why the Real Figure Runs Higher

Those numbers assume continuous running at the rated power, which is the ceiling rather than the average. A unit with a thermostat cycles its compressor on and off once the target temperature is reached, so actual consumption in a well insulated room can fall below the table. The opposite applies in the conditions that prompt people to buy one. A single hose portable unit expels hot air through a window duct, and the air it expels has to be replaced, so it draws warm air in through gaps around the window kit, under doors and through the fabric of the building. The compressor then runs closer to continuously to overcome the air it is itself pulling in, which is why single hose designs underperform their rated output in practice.

Two things narrow that gap without changing the appliance. Sealing the window kit properly, rather than leaving the sash gap partly open around the hose, removes the largest single source of the infiltration. Cooling one room with the door shut rather than attempting to cool a floor reduces the volume being treated. Beyond that, the underlying building physics do most of the work: closing curtains and blinds on sun-facing windows during the day, ventilating at night when outside air falls below inside air, and running the unit for a defined period before bed rather than through the night all reduce hours of operation. Hours are the variable that the household controls, and hours are what the calculation multiplies.

Fans, Coolers and What They Actually Do

The three product categories sold during a heatwave do different jobs and cost very different amounts. A fan does not cool air at all. It moves it, which accelerates evaporation from skin and produces a cooling sensation, and it costs close to nothing to run. Above roughly 35 degrees Celsius the moving air is warmer than skin and the effect diminishes, which is why health guidance cautions against relying on a fan alone in extreme heat, particularly for older people and those with health conditions. An evaporative cooler passes air over a wet medium, which does lower air temperature but raises humidity, making it less effective in muggy conditions and unsuitable for a sealed room.

Only a refrigerant air conditioner removes heat from a room and rejects it outside, which is why it alone requires a window duct and why it alone carries a meaningful running cost. A dual hose portable unit, which draws its condenser air from outside rather than from the room, avoids much of the infiltration penalty and performs closer to its rating, though it costs more to buy. A fixed split system is markedly more efficient again, but installation involves an external unit, sealed refrigerant work by a qualified installer and, for many properties, consideration of planning rules, with listed buildings and conservation areas treated differently from a standard house.

Where the Cap Goes Next

The cap for July to September 2026 rose 13 per cent on the previous quarter, an increase Ofgem attributed principally to higher wholesale gas costs. Electricity absorbed a smaller share of that rise than gas did, but the unit rate still climbed, and the standing charge fell slightly at the same time as network costs were reallocated. Ofgem also updated its Typical Domestic Consumption Values from 1 July to reflect the fact that households now use less energy than the previous benchmark assumed, which changed the headline annual figure that gets quoted in coverage without changing what any individual household pays.
