On 8 October 2026 Lloyds announced an option called Upfront Interest on its one-year Online Fixed Bond. On 8 October 2026 the Food Standards Agency (FSA) published recall notice FSA-PRIN-48-2026. On 9 October 2026 the Home Office announced that victims of modern slavery on Skilled Worker visas are free to leave abusive employers without risking their immigration status. On 9 October 2026 the Office of Rail and Road (ORR) launched a consultation on a draft Retail Code of Practice for the online rail ticket market under Great British Railways (GBR). On 10 October 2026 the FSA issued a Food Alert for Action, reference FSA-FAFA-03-2026, covering raw shell-on eggs from one Ukrainian food business, Yasensvit Ltd of Kyiv, product code 3UA1012066.
Each item changes something specific for households. The DWP campaign concerns fees charged by claims management companies. The Home Office change concerns the link between a worker and a sponsor. The Lloyds option concerns when interest is paid on a fixed bond. The ORR consultation concerns access to fares and systems for online retailers. The two FSA notices concern separate food products and separate advice. The dates still ahead are 11 December 2026 and spring 2027.
Benefits: claiming is free
On 8 October 2026 the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) published its 'Don't pay to claim' campaign toolkit. The campaign is aimed at people who may be eligible for Attendance Allowance, and Pension Age Disability Payment in Scotland. DWP says some claims management companies charge over 1,000 pounds to complete an Attendance Allowance application that could be done for free with the right support. DWP says claims management companies are taking between 35% and 48% of any backdated payment or pension increase from a successful Home Responsibilities Protection claim. DWP says these companies are not doing anything illegal, but that the impact on individuals can be significant.
Attendance Allowance is not means-tested: eligibility depends on need, not income. DWP says free help is available from Citizens Advice and Independent Age, and that it is always free to claim directly. The DWP statement that the companies are not doing anything illegal sits alongside its statement that the impact on individuals can be significant.
Visas: recognised victims can leave an abusive sponsor
On 9 October 2026 the Home Office announced that victims of modern slavery on Skilled Worker visas are free to leave abusive employers without risking their immigration status. Once a person is formally recognised by the Home Office as a victim of modern slavery, they are no longer tied to a specific sponsor and can take up any lawful work for the rest of their visa. The Home Office says the change will help workers across the Skilled Worker route, including care workers. The change applies from the point of formal recognition by the Home Office.
More than 6,600 sponsors have been stripped of their licence to hire overseas workers since the current government came to power, according to the Home Office. Over 4,400 of those licences were revoked in the year ending June 2026, a 140% rise on the year before and the highest level on record, according to the Home Office. A reader on a Skilled Worker visa who has been recognised by the Home Office as a victim of modern slavery can take up any lawful work for the rest of the visa without being tied to a specific sponsor.
Savings: a year's interest paid upfront
On 8 October 2026 Lloyds announced an option called Upfront Interest on its one-year Online Fixed Bond. With Upfront Interest, customers can receive 12 months of interest in the first month, while their savings stay fixed for the full term. Lloyds says it is the only UK bank to offer this. The Online Fixed Bond pays 4.00% AER/gross fixed interest for one year. At 4.00%, a deposit of 10,000 pounds earns 400 pounds gross over the year.
Customers cannot withdraw any money until the 12 month term is up. Customers can still choose to have their interest paid when the bond matures. A reader comparing the two payment timings can use the same rate and the same lock-in: 4.00% AER/gross fixed for one year, with no withdrawals until the 12 month term is up. The difference is when the interest is paid. Under Upfront Interest, 12 months of interest is paid in the first month. Under the alternative, interest is paid when the bond matures. At 4.00%, a deposit of 10,000 pounds earns 400 pounds gross over the year under either timing.
Rail: draft rules for online ticket sales
On 9 October 2026 the Office of Rail and Road (ORR) launched a consultation on a draft Retail Code of Practice for the online rail ticket market under Great British Railways (GBR). GBR's future online retailer will replace the 14 websites and apps of DfT-contracted train operators. Independent retailers, open access operators and devolved operators will continue to be able to sell tickets as they do now. The proposed code would require GBR to give all non-GBR online retailers fair, transparent and non-discriminatory access to fares, products, systems and related services. The code is a draft proposal at this stage.
The ORR consultation closes on 11 December 2026, and the final Retail Code is expected to be published in spring 2027. A reader who buys tickets through any of the 14 websites and apps of DfT-contracted train operators can note that GBR's future online retailer will replace them. A reader who buys through an independent retailer, an open access operator or a devolved operator can note that those sellers will continue to be able to sell tickets as they do now. A reader who wants to respond to the draft can do so before the consultation closes on 11 December 2026. The final Retail Code is expected to be published in spring 2027.
Food safety: one recall and one alert
On 8 October 2026 the Food Standards Agency (FSA) published recall notice FSA-PRIN-48-2026. Greencore is recalling five products because Salmonella has been found in pistachio nuts used as an ingredient: two Pinch ready meals, which the FSA notice says are sold exclusively through Tesco, and three M&S products. The FSA's advice to consumers who bought a recalled product is: do not eat it, and return it to the store where it was bought for a full refund. A receipt is not needed.
On 10 October 2026 the FSA issued a Food Alert for Action, reference FSA-FAFA-03-2026, covering raw shell-on eggs from one Ukrainian food business, Yasensvit Ltd of Kyiv, product code 3UA1012066. The FSA says the eggs were found to be contaminated with Salmonella Enteritidis and that the strain is linked to 36 Salmonella cases in England in 2026. The FSA says most of these eggs go through the catering supply chain, though some may be sold in small shops, and that large supermarkets do not sell them. The FSA says eggs produced in the UK are not affected. The FSA's advice to consumers is not to eat the affected eggs and to dispose of them at home. The Greencore recall and the egg alert are two separate notices about different products.
Dates to note
Two dates are still ahead. The ORR consultation on the draft Retail Code of Practice closes on 11 December 2026. The final Retail Code is expected to be published in spring 2027. Both dates relate to the same draft proposal for the online rail ticket market under Great British Railways.
The remaining dates are the announcement dates: 8 October 2026 for the DWP campaign toolkit, the Lloyds Upfront Interest option and the FSA recall notice FSA-PRIN-48-2026; 9 October 2026 for the Home Office change and the ORR consultation launch; and 10 October 2026 for the FSA Food Alert for Action FSA-FAFA-03-2026. The Home Office revocation figures cover the year ending June 2026. The FSA egg alert refers to 36 Salmonella cases in England in 2026.
