Which ChatGPT plans show ads
The advertiser-view quote is from Donatas Smailys, CEO of Billo, supplied by Sensus PR on 6 October 2026. Product facts are from OpenAI's own announcements of 16 September and 5 October 2026 and OpenAI's pricing page.
OpenAI introduced advertising in ChatGPT earlier in 2026 to support the Free and lower-priced tiers. The split is by plan. Ads run on the Free plan and on the Go plan. They do not run on Plus or Pro. In the UK, ChatGPT Go is priced at 8 pounds a month and ChatGPT Plus at 20 pounds a month, according to TechRadar in 2026. Those are the prices as charged in pounds, so a UK reader comparing tiers is looking at GBP 8 for the ad-bearing paid tier and GBP 20 for the ad-free paid tier.
The tier history matters for anyone trying to work out what they are paying for. ChatGPT Go launched first in India in August 2025 and was later rolled out more widely, including the UK, by 2026. The Free tier has always been the entry point, and it is the tier where advertising was introduced first. The practical result is a three-way choice in the UK: Free with ads, Go at GBP 8 a month with ads, or Plus at GBP 20 a month without ads. Pro sits above Plus and also does not carry ads. OpenAI has not described any plan in which a UK user pays for Go and receives an ad-free experience.
Where the ads appear and what they look like
OpenAI has described three placements. The first is labelled ads beneath answers, shown in conversations where the topic has commercial intent. The second is sponsored results inside ChatGPT search. The third is a visual ad format shown while an image is being generated. That third format was announced on 5 October 2026, with testing to start later in October 2026 in the US with an initial group of advertisers. OpenAI said the image-generation ads will be clearly labelled, will remain separate from the image being created, and will not influence ChatGPT's answers.
The common thread across the three formats is labelling and separation from the answer. OpenAI says ads do not change the answer itself. In the conversation format, the ad sits beneath the answer rather than inside it. In search, the sponsored result is marked as sponsored. In the image format, the ad is kept apart from the image being generated. OpenAI reported more than 900 million weekly active users in 2026 and said around 20 percent of questions carry direct commercial intent, a figure given at Cannes Lions in 2026. That commercial-intent share is the pool the conversation and search formats are built around.
Where ads are live and when the UK gets them
The rollout has moved in stages. The US came first for the conversation and search formats. Ads then expanded to India in August 2026, according to TechCrunch reporting. The image-generation format began testing in the US from late October 2026 with an initial advertiser group. OpenAI has said ads will eventually expand to other territories beyond the US. No UK launch date has been announced as of 6 October 2026. That is the position a UK reader should hold: expansion is stated as an intention, and no date exists.
What a UK user can expect to see today is nothing yet on a UK account. The formats described are live in the US, and the image format is in a US test. India received the conversation and search formats in August 2026. The UK is not on the announced list. UK search demand for the term chatgpt ads is about 3,600 searches a month, according to OpenSEO data for the UK in October 2026, which indicates a lot of UK readers are checking the same question without a UK answer to find. Until OpenAI names a date, any UK timeline is an assumption rather than a fact.
How OpenAI says it decides which ad to show
Matching uses the current conversation, not a profile built from past chats. That is the mechanism OpenAI has described. OpenAI also states that ads will not influence answers. The distinction matters because it separates the ad system from the answer system: the ad is selected against what is being discussed now, and the answer is produced on its own terms. OpenAI has not described a behavioural profile assembled from a user's chat history as the basis for ad selection.
The commercial machinery around that matching has been built through 2026. OpenAI opened a beta self-serve Ads Manager with cost-per-click bidding on 5 May 2026. On 16 September 2026 OpenAI published Reimagining advertising with AI, adding an Ads Manager plugin so advertisers create, update and analyse campaigns in ChatGPT with natural-language prompts, plus a Shopify integration for US-based merchants and a Sponsored Agents test with HubSpot and Shopify. On 5 October 2026 the measurement side expanded: conversion-data integrations, ten attribution partners, geo-lift and brand-lift tests, and brand-suitability pilots with DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science. The direction is a self-serve system with bidding, measurement and brand-safety checks attached.
What UK users can do about it
There are three routes once ads reach a UK account. A user can stay on Free or Go and accept ads when they arrive. A user can move to Plus at GBP 20 a month for an ad-free experience. Or a user can use the cancellation route under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013, which gives a consumer who buys a digital subscription online 14 days to cancel, unless they agreed to immediate supply and acknowledged losing the right. That 14-day window applies to a new subscription, so it is a route for someone who has just signed up rather than a standing option.
One data point is worth stating plainly. Ads are shown alongside answers, so prompts typed in ad-bearing tiers may be used for ad matching under OpenAI's terms. That is a consequence of how the conversation format works: matching uses the current conversation, and the current conversation is the prompt. A user who wants no ad matching has the Plus route at GBP 20 a month. A user who stays on Free or Go is on a tier where the conversation is the matching surface. Neither route is a recommendation here; both are simply what the plan structure and the stated matching method produce.
What it means for advertisers and publishers
For advertisers, the toolkit is now self-serve. Ads Manager with cost-per-click bidding opened in beta on 5 May 2026. The 16 September 2026 announcement added the Ads Manager plugin, the Shopify integration for US-based merchants and the Sponsored Agents test with HubSpot and Shopify. The 5 October 2026 announcement added conversion-data integrations, ten attribution partners, geo-lift and brand-lift tests, and brand-suitability pilots with DoubleVerify and Integral Ad Science. Early results OpenAI cites come from existing formats and a small partner group, not the image format. Donatas Smailys, CEO of Billo, a US creator-marketing company, said via Sensus PR on 6 October 2026: 'Someone generating an image in ChatGPT is not shopping. OpenAI has explained how ads match to conversations, but not how that carries over to image generation. Until it does, effectiveness is an open question.' He added that early results come from existing formats and a small group of partners, and advised advertisers to test with small budgets and their own benchmarks.
For publishers whose pages ChatGPT cites, the structural point is placement. Ads sit around the answer, not inside the cited source material. The ad is attached to the conversation or the search result, while the cited page remains the cited page. That is a factual description of where the ad units sit relative to cited sources, and it is the part of the format that a publisher watching referral traffic would need to track as the rollout reaches new territories. No UK date exists for that rollout as of 6 October 2026.
