WiFi calling lets you make and receive phone calls over a WiFi internet connection instead of a mobile network signal. When you are in a basement, rural area, thick-walled building or anywhere with poor signal, WiFi calling routes your call over your broadband connection instead. Calls sound identical to normal calls, use your existing phone number and cost the same as standard calls. Here is how it works in 2026.
Key facts April 2026
WiFi calling: routes calls over broadband when mobile signal is poor  |  Cost: same as standard calls — included in your plan minutes  |  All major networks: EE, O2, Vodafone, Three, Sky, giffgaff all support it  |  Requires: compatible phone + WiFi connection

How WiFi Calling Works

Your phone continuously monitors signal strength. When mobile signal drops below a usable threshold, WiFi calling automatically routes calls through your broadband internet connection using VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) technology. The handoff is seamless — callers cannot tell the difference, and your phone number is unchanged.

Does WiFi Calling Work Abroad?

Yes — and this is one of the most useful aspects of WiFi calling for travellers. When you are abroad and connected to a hotel or restaurant WiFi, you can make and receive calls to UK numbers at your normal domestic rate — without any roaming charges. This works as long as your network supports international WiFi calling (all major UK networks do in 2026). Simply:
  • Connect to any WiFi network abroad
  • Ensure WiFi calling is enabled on your phone
  • Make calls to UK numbers as normal — they are charged at UK domestic rates, not roaming rates
  • Receive calls on your UK number as normal
  • Data calls (WhatsApp, FaceTime) are separate and use the WiFi data connection
