Best useLong-haul business or first class — points stretch furthest at premium cabin rates
Interest trapCarrying a balance on a rewards card negates all reward value instantly
Annual feePremium cards charge £150-£650/year; must earn this back in value
Sign-up bonusTypically 5,000-40,000 points; valued at £25-£400 depending on redemption
FCA noteAll credit cards regulated by FCA; compare APR and fees, not just rewards

Airline credit cards are the most effective way to earn travel rewards for people who clear their balance in full every month. The main UK schemes — British Airways Executive Club (Avios), Virgin Atlantic Flying Club, and American Express Membership Rewards — can yield significant value, but only if used correctly. For anyone who carries a balance, reward card interest charges immediately exceed any points value.

What Is an Avios Actually Worth?

BA short-haul economy (Off Peak)0.5-0.8pLondon-Edinburgh for 9,000 Avios + ~£35 taxes
BA long-haul economy (Off Peak)0.8-1.2pLondon-New York for 26,000 Avios each way
BA long-haul business class2-3pLondon-NYC Club World for 60,000 Avios + taxes
BA first class3p+London-NYC First for 85,000 Avios + taxes
Avios converted to cash (poor option)0.25-0.35pWorst value — avoid

The Companion Voucher — BA Amex Core Value

The BA Amex companion voucher gives a 2-for-1 Avios redemption — book two seats for the Avios price of one (taxes still apply for both). The free BA Amex triggers this at £20,000 spend per year; Premium Plus at £10,000. On a business class redemption to New York the voucher saves 60,000 Avios — worth £1,200-£1,800 at 2-3p per Avios. Even at 1p that is £600 saved — comfortably above the £250 annual fee.

Avoiding the Interest Trap

Rewards cards typically charge 26-30% APR. Carrying a £1,000 balance for one month costs approximately £22-£25 in interest. At 1 Avios per £1 you earn 1,000 Avios on £1,000 spend — worth approximately £5-£10. One month of interest wipes out multiple months of rewards. Set up a direct debit for the full statement balance. This is non-negotiable.

💡 Tip: Set up a direct debit for the full statement balance on the card payment date. Never pay only the minimum. Rewards have zero value if you pay interest.

Amex Acceptance

American Express is not accepted at all UK retailers — notably most supermarkets. For Amex-based cards this limits earning potential. Some cardholders use Amex for large purchases (online, travel, restaurants) and a Visa/Mastercard for everywhere else. The BA Mastercard (MBNA/Barclays) earns Avios on Visa/Mastercard rails but at lower earn rates than Amex.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Avios expire?

Avios do not expire provided you have at least one eligible earning or spending transaction within 36 months. Inactive accounts see points expire after 36 months. A small Avios-earning activity resets the clock. (Source: BA Executive Club terms)

Can I combine Avios from different cards?

Yes. Avios from BA Amex, Nectar card, Iberia and other Avios-earning products all feed into the same BA Executive Club account when linked. Amex Membership Rewards transfer to Avios at 1:1 in minimum batches of 500.
