Aviva Insurance Limited: FCA registration and parent group

Aviva Insurance Limited is authorised and regulated by the Prudential Regulation Authority (PRA) and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) under Firm Reference Number 202153. You can confirm current authorisation at the FCA Register. The group's ultimate parent is Aviva plc, one of the FTSE 100 constituents.

Aviva has been providing general insurance in the UK since 1696 in its predecessor form (originally General Accident and later Norwich Union). In its current form under FRN 202153, the firm is authorised to effect and carry out contracts of general insurance, including private motor.

The UK motor insurance market comprises approximately 110 FCA-authorised motor insurers (FCA Register 2026). Aviva is among the top five by gross written premium.

Cover levels available from Aviva

Aviva sells motor insurance directly under two tiers: Comprehensive and Comprehensive Plus. There is no third-party-only or TPFT product sold under the direct Aviva brand on its main consumer channel as of April 2026.

Comprehensive: covers accidental damage to your own vehicle, third-party liability, fire and theft, windscreen repair, and personal accident cover. EU driving cover is included up to 90 days.

Comprehensive Plus: adds motor legal protection (up to £100,000 cover for legal costs), a guaranteed replacement vehicle (not just a courtesy car subject to availability), and enhanced personal accident cover. This tier directly competes with Admiral Platinum and Direct Line's DL Plus.

The Road Traffic Act 1988, section 143, mandates that every vehicle used on a UK public road carries at minimum third-party cover. Aviva's direct products are both above this legal minimum.

Aviva premiums: market positioning

The UK average premium was £622 in Q4 2025 (ABI 2025), down 16% from the 2024 peak of £741. Aviva's pricing for standard comprehensive cover is broadly in line with the market median for low-to-medium risk profiles (drivers aged 30-55, vehicles in groups 1-20, clean licence, five or more years NCD).

For drivers aged 17-20, the UK average is £1,539 (ABI 2025). Young drivers will typically find Aviva's direct channel less competitive than specialist young-driver brands such as Marmalade or insurers with embedded telematics programmes. Approximately 1.5 million UK drivers hold a telematics policy (BIBA 2025); Aviva does not offer telematics via its direct channel.

Insurance Premium Tax at 12% (HMRC, gov.uk) is embedded in all quoted premiums.

What Aviva includes as standard vs as extras

Standard on Aviva Comprehensive: 24-hour claims line, EU cover (90 days), windscreen cover (no excess for repair, excess for full replacement), personal accident (up to £5,000 for driver), new car replacement (if your car is written off within the first year and under 60,000 miles).

Not standard; paid add-ons on Comprehensive: breakdown cover (Aviva uses RAC), motor legal protection, key cover, and protected NCD.

Aviva Comprehensive Plus bundles motor legal protection and a guaranteed replacement vehicle. The legal cover has a £100,000 limit, which matches the standard ARAG-underwritten motor legal product used by several UK direct insurers.

No-claims discount protection is available as a paid add-on. Aviva's NCD discount scale reaches a maximum at five years, after which additional years of claims-free driving do not increase the discount percentage. This is consistent with most UK insurers' NCD structures.

Visit the car insurance hub for how Aviva's add-on structure compares across the market.

Pros and cons

✓ Pros✗ Cons

✓ Aviva's scale means it processes a high volume of claims, which is associated with operational consistency. The guaranteed replacement vehicle on Comprehensive Plus is a genuine differentiator, many competitors offer a courtesy car "subject to availability" which can mean a delay at claim time.

✓ Aviva's online claims tracking portal allows policyholders to monitor repair status in real time, which reduces the number of outbound calls needed to check progress.

✓ For customers with existing Aviva home insurance, the group offers a multi-product discount. This is worth checking for homeowners who are already Aviva customers.

✗ Aviva does not appear on all aggregator panels and does not offer telematics for direct customers, which means younger or higher-risk drivers are unlikely to find Aviva the cheapest option. The absence of a TPFT product via direct channel means drivers seeking the legal minimum are directed elsewhere.

✗ Aviva's compulsory excess can be higher than some competitors for higher insurance group vehicles, which affects the net cost at claim time.
