Direct Line: FCA registration and group identity

Direct Line Insurance Group plc is authorised and regulated under the trading entity U K Insurance Limited, Firm Reference Number 202457. Confirm at the FCA Register. Note: the FRN for Direct Line's motor business (202457) differs from the Churchill motor FRN (202810), both are trading names of legal entities within Direct Line Group plc, but they are registered under separate FRNs reflecting different underwriting entities.

Direct Line was founded in 1985 as the UK's first direct telephone motor insurer, removing the broker intermediary. It pioneered the direct-to-consumer model that is now common across the market. Direct Line Group plc was listed on the London Stock Exchange in 2012.

Direct Line is one of the UK's top-five motor insurers by gross written premium. It does not appear on price comparison websites, all quotes require a visit to directline.com.

Cover tiers: Direct Line's product range

Direct Line offers four tiers:

Third Party Only: legal minimum under the Road Traffic Act 1988, s.143.

Third Party Fire & Theft: adds fire and theft cover for the insured vehicle.

Comprehensive: covers accidental damage plus TPFT protections. Standard inclusions: windscreen cover (chip repair no excess), EU cover (90 days), personal accident (up to £5,000), and 24-hour claims line.

DL Plus: Direct Line's enhanced tier. Adds motor legal expenses cover (up to £100,000), a guaranteed hire car (not subject to availability), and enhanced personal accident (up to £10,000). DL Plus competes directly with Churchill Plus, Aviva Comprehensive Plus, and Admiral Platinum.

Direct Line premiums: direct-only pricing

The UK market average was £622 in Q4 2025 (ABI 2025). Direct Line's absence from aggregators means it does not price against real-time comparison panel data. For some risk profiles, particularly older, lower-risk drivers, Direct Line's direct pricing can be competitive. For younger or higher-risk drivers, the absence from aggregators means Direct Line may not surface as the cheapest option without a dedicated manual search.

Drivers aged 17-20 average £1,539 nationally (ABI 2025). Direct Line does not offer a telematics product, which means young drivers are unlikely to find its pricing competitive versus specialist telematics providers.

Insurance Premium Tax at 12% (HMRC, gov.uk) is included in all premiums.

What Direct Line includes and excludes

Standard Comprehensive inclusions: windscreen cover (repair zero excess, replacement subject to excess), EU cover 90 days, personal accident £5,000, audio equipment (OEM-fitted), in-house claims handling.

Not standard on Comprehensive: motor legal protection (DL Plus only), guaranteed hire car (DL Plus only), breakdown cover (separate Green Flag product), key cover, and protected NCD.

Direct Line owns Green Flag breakdown cover. Breakdown is sold as a linked product but priced separately.

Exclusions: hire and reward without extension, competitive driving events, war risk, wear and tear, mechanical failure.

Pros and cons

✓ Pros✗ Cons

✓ The direct model has advantages: no broker commission on the premium, in-house claims handling, and a 24-hour claims line. Direct Line's Fix & Drive product, where approved repairers are sent directly to the policyholder's location for minor damage, reduces the friction of taking the vehicle to a repair centre.

✓ DL Plus is a well-specified enhanced tier. Guaranteed hire car (not "subject to availability") is a material differentiator versus Admiral Comprehensive, which does not include a courtesy car guarantee on its standard tier.

✗ No aggregator presence means consumers must proactively seek a Direct Line quote. If you only use comparison sites, you will never see a Direct Line price. The absence from panels also means Direct Line cannot be the "cheapest result" on an aggregator search by definition.

✗ No telematics product. No multi-car equivalent to Admiral MultiCover.
