What has changed

Direct Line home insurance is being sold through price comparison websites for the first time. An Aviva newsroom release published on 3 September 2026 confirms the launch, and the rollout begins exclusively on Confused.com before expanding to additional price comparison websites from late September 2026. The move places a brand that built four decades of recognition on direct selling into the channel it once avoided, and it gives shoppers a new way to obtain a quote under a name they already know.

The products are not simply the existing direct range listed on a comparison site. They are new home insurance products designed specifically for price comparison website customers, offered in three tiers: Essentials, Standard and Premium. Each tier provides three levels of buildings and contents cover, alongside variable voluntary excess options, a choice of payment methods, and optional cover extensions and add-ons. Matt Pernet, Commercial Director, Direct Line Retail PCW, at Aviva, said: "Making Direct Line home insurance available through price comparison websites for the first time is an important step in giving customers more choice in how they buy cover." Steve Dukes, CEO at Confused.com, said: "Direct Line is an exciting addition to our current offering of leading insurance brands in the home insurance market."

Why it matters

Direct Line started in 1985 as the first UK insurance company to use the telephone as its main channel. It provides motor, home and pet insurance direct by phone or online and is part of the Aviva Group. For 40 years the brand marketed itself on not appearing on comparison sites, so the decision to appear on them marks a clear change in how the business reaches customers. Aviva describes the launch as supporting its multi-channel distribution strategy, which means the group now serves shoppers through more than one route to market.

The ownership context explains the shift. Aviva completed its takeover of Direct Line Group in 2025, and Aviva's other brands include Churchill, Privilege and Green Flag. Aviva states it has 25.3 million customers, paid 31.9 billion pounds in claims and benefits in 2025, is a FTSE 100 company, and had group assets under management of 479 billion pounds at 30 June 2026. For a shopper, the practical effect is that a Direct Line branded policy bought through a comparison site may sit alongside quotes from Churchill, Privilege and other insurers inside the same group, so the comparison is not automatically between unrelated businesses.

KT analysis: comparing beyond the headline price

A product range built specifically for comparison site customers means the Essentials tier may carry lower cover limits or fewer standard inclusions than the direct product carrying the same brand name. The tier names are the same across the range, but the cover behind them can differ, so the cheapest quote on screen is not necessarily the closest match to what a household already holds. Shoppers should check the buildings sum insured or whether unlimited rebuild cover applies, the contents limit, the single-item limit, whether accidental damage is included, the escape of water excess, legal expenses, home emergency cover, and whether alternative accommodation is included if the home becomes uninhabitable.

The reason the comparison site range differs from the direct range comes down to how the products are built. A comparison site listing has to be summarised in a small number of fields, which encourages a structure of clear tiers and variable voluntary excess options rather than a single configurable policy. That structure is convenient, but it pushes detail into the policy document. The sensible approach is to compare the policy document, not the brand. Two quotes with the same headline price can differ materially on excess, on what counts as a valid claim, and on how a claim is handled, and those differences only become visible when the wording is read side by side.

Rules that protect the buyer

FCA general insurance pricing rules have been in force since 1 January 2022 and prohibit charging renewing customers more than the equivalent new business price through the same sales channel. This matters when a brand appears on a comparison site, because the price a new customer sees there and the price an existing customer is offered at renewal must be consistent within the same channel. The rules do not force every channel to match every other channel, so a comparison site quote and a direct quote can still differ, but a renewal cannot be priced above the equivalent new business price for that channel.

Other protections apply alongside the pricing rules. Consumer Duty requires firms to deliver fair value, general insurance policies carry a 14-day cooling-off period, and complaints go to the insurer first and then to the Financial Ombudsman Service. For anyone comparing the new Direct Line tiers, these rules set the floor rather than the target. The tier, the excess, the cover limits and the claims process remain the deciding factors, and the policy document is where those are confirmed.

How many tiers are available?

There are 3 tiers: Essentials, Standard and Premium. Each provides three levels of buildings and contents cover, variable voluntary excess options, a choice of payment methods, and optional cover extensions and add-ons.

Why does the comparison site range differ from the direct range?

The products are designed specifically for price comparison website customers. A comparison site listing has to be summarised in a small number of fields, which encourages a structure of clear tiers and variable voluntary excess options rather than a single configurable policy.

What should be compared beyond the headline price?

Check the buildings sum insured or unlimited rebuild cover, the contents limit, the single-item limit, accidental damage, the escape of water excess, legal expenses, home emergency cover, and whether alternative accommodation is included. Compare the policy document, not the brand.
