What Three announced

Source: Three Mobile, 16 September 2026.

Three opened pre-orders on 12 September 2026 for the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, the Apple Watch Series 12, the Apple Watch Ultra 4 and AirPods 5. The iPhone Duo, the first foldable iPhone, is available to pre-order from 16 October 2026. Three published the details on 16 September 2026. Apple had announced the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max on 9 September 2026, with the Siri AI and software platform updates following on 14 September 2026.

The entry pricing for the iPhone 18 Pro lineup is 51.88 pounds a month. That figure is made up of two separate agreements: a 17 pound monthly Lite airtime plan with 30GB of data over 24 months, and a 34.88 pound monthly device plan over 36 months. The two terms do not match, and that mismatch is the single most important detail in the offer. The device plan is a credit agreement that runs for a full year after the airtime contract has ended. Other devices in the range carry their own pricing: the Apple Watch Series 12 in 42mm is available from 13.50 pounds per month over 36 months, and AirPods 5 start at 119 pounds.

Three also advertises savings of up to 855 pounds on trade-in. Three's own note states that this figure is based on trading in an iPhone 17 Pro Max 2TB, which is the most expensive model in the previous range. That is the top of the range, not a typical handset, so the headline saving applies only to a narrow set of customers. Terms and conditions apply. The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max feature a 48MP Fusion Main camera with variable aperture, the A20 Pro chip, Apple Intelligence and Siri AI rolling out in beta in English with iOS 27. The iPhone Duo has a 7.6 inch inner display and a 5.4 inch outer display, and both the Duo and the iPhone 18 Pro models use eSIM, with the Duo being eSIM-only.

The total, with the price rise included

Three's notes to editors state that all plans and deals are subject to annual price rises, with the monthly charge increasing every 1 April by 2.50 pounds for Pay Monthly airtime and data plans. That is a fixed pounds-and-pence increase, not a percentage, and it applies to the airtime element rather than the device plan. Working the numbers through on the entry offer shows how the headline figure and the total diverge.

The device plan at 34.88 pounds over 36 months comes to 1,255.68 pounds, and that figure is fixed for the life of the agreement. The airtime at 17 pounds for 24 months is 408 pounds before any rises. Two April increases of 2.50 pounds a month take it higher, adding roughly 60 to 90 pounds depending on the month the contract starts. Total cost across the term, before any trade-in, is comfortably over 1,700 pounds. The device plan then continues for 12 months after the airtime contract ends, so the monthly outlay does not stop when the data plan does.

Ofcom rules require providers to state price rises in pounds and pence at the point of sale for contracts entered into from 17 January 2025, which is why the 2.50 pound figure appears in the terms rather than a percentage range. A fixed cash increase hits cheaper plans hardest in proportional terms, because 2.50 pounds is a larger share of a 17 pound plan than of a more expensive one. Three's Your Way plans include unlimited data options, inclusive roaming in over 160 destinations, up to 24 months of Paramount+, up to three years extended warranty and a free screen repair. The notes state that inclusive roaming applies on Value and Complete plans, Paramount+ on Complete plans, and free screen repair on the 24 month Complete plan when taken with a device. None of those extras attach to the Lite plan used in the headline price.

Three things buyers miss

The first is the nature of the device plan. A device plan sold separately from airtime is a regulated credit agreement, so it is recorded on a credit file and is included in lenders' affordability assessments. For anyone planning a mortgage, a remortgage or another significant borrowing application within the 36 month term, the monthly device payment counts as a committed outgoing. It does not disappear when the airtime plan ends at month 24, because the credit agreement still has 12 months to run.

The second is the gap between the advertised benefits and the plan in the headline price. The free screen repair applies only on the 24 month Complete plan taken with a device, not the Lite plan that produces the 51.88 pound figure. The same applies to inclusive roaming, which the notes restrict to Value and Complete plans, and to Paramount+, which is a Complete plan benefit. A buyer comparing the headline price against a rival offer may be comparing a stripped-back plan against a fuller one without realising it.

The third concerns the iPhone Duo. It is eSIM-only, which makes switching networks easier in principle because there is no physical SIM to replace, but it also means the handset must be supported by the receiving network. Anyone who buys the foldable and later wants to move to a different provider needs to confirm that the destination network supports the device on eSIM before committing. The iPhone 18 Pro models also use eSIM, though the Duo is the model where the design is eSIM-only.

The alternative to compare against

The obvious comparison is buying the handset outright or on an interest-free purchase plan and pairing it with a SIM-only deal. Over three years that route usually costs less, for two reasons. The airtime is repriceable annually on its own terms rather than bundled into a headline figure, and the handset is owned rather than financed, so there is no credit agreement running past the end of the airtime contract. SIM-only deals on the same networks can be compared on our deals pages.

The arithmetic is not the only difference. A separate purchase removes the 36 month device commitment from the credit file, which matters for anyone whose borrowing capacity is tight. It also means the handset can be sold or traded in at any point without settling a finance agreement first. Against that, a bundled contract spreads the cost and avoids a large upfront payment, which is the reason the format persists.

Whichever route is chosen, the annual rise wording deserves attention. Three's increase is a fixed pounds-and-pence amount rather than a percentage, so it takes a larger proportional bite out of a cheaper plan. A buyer on the 17 pound Lite airtime plan feels a 2.50 pound rise more sharply than a buyer on a more expensive plan. Reading the rise clause before signing, rather than after the first April statement, is the practical step. Three is part of VodafoneThree, described in the release as the UK's largest mobile provider, investing 11 billion pounds and targeting 99.95 percent population coverage by 2034.

Insurance, and whether it is worth it

A 1,200 pound handset is the point at which gadget or mobile phone cover becomes a real question rather than an afterthought. The first check is whether home contents insurance already covers personal possessions away from home. Many home contents policies include that as an optional extension, and it can cover a mobile phone. If the extension is already in place, a standalone policy may duplicate cover that has already been paid for.

If it is not in place, three details matter before buying anything. The first is the excess, because a high excess on a phone claim can exceed the value of a repair. The second is whether a claim would affect the no-claims discount on the home policy, since a phone claim could raise the cost of the home cover at renewal by more than the phone is worth. The third is the claims process itself, including how long a replacement takes and whether the policy covers the full replacement value of the handset.

Network insurance is typically the most expensive route, because it is sold at the point of purchase alongside the device and carries the convenience premium. Standalone gadget policies and the home contents extension are generally cheaper, though the cover terms differ. The decision is not only about the monthly premium but about what happens at the point of claim, and that is where the excess and the no-claims discount interact. For a handset bought on a 36 month device plan, the insurance question also runs for longer than the airtime contract, since the device remains financed after month 24.
