TL;DR

Direct Line (FCA FRN 202111) is a direct-only car and home insurer: it does not appear on comparison sites. This is a deliberate commercial choice, not a regulatory restriction. Direct Line's parent group was acquired by Aviva in 2025. KT Score: 68/100.

About Direct Line

Direct Line Insurance plc (FCA FRN 202111) is a UK general insurer founded in 1985. It was the UK's first telephone-based insurer, pioneering the direct-to-consumer model that bypassed brokers at a time when most motor insurance was sold through intermediaries. The brand remains associated with that heritage: it does not sell through comparison sites or broker channels.

Direct Line Group plc was acquired by Aviva plc in 2025, making Direct Line a subsidiary of Aviva group. The Direct Line, Churchill and Darwin brands continue to operate as separate entities under Aviva ownership. FCA FRN 202111 remains the authorisation for the Direct Line Insurance legal entity.

The Direct-Only Distribution Model

Direct Line's absence from comparison sites is a deliberate commercial position, not a regulatory constraint. The brand argues that comparison sites optimise for price over quality, and that its direct model allows it to invest in claims handling and customer service rather than panel fees and marketing spend on comparison platforms. Critics argue that the absence from comparison sites reduces competitive pricing pressure.

Since the FCA's dual pricing rules took effect in January 2022, Direct Line must offer renewal quotes no higher than the equivalent new customer price for the same cover. This rule applies regardless of distribution channel. Direct Line's compliance with the pricing rules has been assessed directly by the FCA.

Aviva Acquisition: What Changed

Aviva's acquisition of Direct Line Group in 2025 created the largest personal lines insurer in the UK. From a policyholder's perspective, existing Direct Line policies continue to be administered under the same FRN and brand. Claims continue to be handled by Direct Line's operations, which are now integrated into the Aviva group structure. New policies from Direct Line do not automatically mean they are underwritten by Aviva Insurance Limited.

The integration process between Aviva group and the former Direct Line Group is expected to run over a multi-year period. Brand retirement decisions, if any, would be announced publicly and with adequate notice periods for affected policyholders. At the time of this review, Direct Line continues to market and sell new policies under its own brand through its own direct channels, with no announced plan to consolidate the Direct Line brand into Aviva branded products. Churchill is in the same position: continuing as a separate consumer brand under Aviva group ownership with its own marketing and distribution structure.

Direct Line's Founding and Heritage

Direct Line was founded in 1985 by Royal Bank of Scotland and launched the UK's first telephone-based car insurance service. Prior to Direct Line's launch, motor insurance in the UK was primarily distributed through brokers, with telephone and later internet direct channels being marginal. The brand's marketing has consistently emphasised its direct-to- consumer heritage, with the red telephone icon remaining a brand asset across four decades.

The group went through several ownership structures: Royal Bank of Scotland Insurance, then Direct Line Group plc (listed on the London Stock Exchange in 2012), and most recently Aviva plc following the 2025 acquisition. Through all ownership changes, the Direct Line brand has maintained its direct-only distribution model as a core commercial position.

Claims Data and ABI Code Signatory Status

Direct Line Insurance plc is a signatory to the ABI's Motor Claims Code, which requires member insurers to publish claims settlement data and adhere to service standards for claimant communication, repair timescales and total loss handling. The ABI code is voluntary but carries reputational weight within the industry and signals a commitment to transparent claims reporting. Direct Line's claims settlement data is published through the ABI's annual motor claims statistics.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is Direct Line not on comparison sites?

Direct Line has historically declined to list its products on price comparison sites as a deliberate strategy. The company states this allows it to focus on service and claims quality rather than price competitiveness against other comparison site panels. This means a Direct Line quote can only be obtained directly at directline.com or by phone.

Is Direct Line the same as Churchill?

Direct Line and Churchill are separate brands but both hold FCA FRN 202111, which is Direct Line Insurance plc, the underwriting entity. Both are now subsidiaries of Aviva plc following the 2025 acquisition. Churchill does appear on some comparison sites where Direct Line does not.

What happened to Direct Line Group in 2025?

Aviva plc completed the acquisition of Direct Line Group plc in 2025, creating the largest personal lines insurer in the UK. Direct Line and Churchill continue to operate as separate brands under Aviva group ownership. The FCA authorisation under FRN 202111 remains in place for the Direct Line Insurance legal entity.

Is Direct Line regulated by the FCA?

Yes. Direct Line Insurance plc is authorised and regulated by both the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) and the Prudential Regulation Authority (PRA) under FRN 202111. The FCA register entry can be verified at register.fca.org.uk.

Does Direct Line offer multi-car insurance?

Direct Line does not offer a branded multi-car product comparable to Admiral MultiCover. Customers with more than one vehicle would need to hold separate Direct Line policies. This is one area where Admiral's product range offers a direct differentiator.
