Your rights when a product is recalled
A recall is a safety measure, separate from the Consumer Rights Act. The seller or manufacturer must offer a remedy, usually a full refund or a free repair or replacement, and cannot charge for it. You do not need the receipt for a safety recall, though proof of purchase helps with a refund of the price paid. If the seller has stopped trading, contact the manufacturer named in the notice, or Citizens Advice for your local Trading Standards service.
Most recalls above were sold online, several through marketplaces. Check your order history for the product name and notice number, stop using the item, and keep it away from children until it is returned or destroyed as the notice instructs.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a receipt to return a recalled product?
No. A safety recall applies to every unit sold, so retailers accept returns without a receipt. Proof of purchase can matter if the refund is for the price you paid rather than a standard amount, so keep an order confirmation if you have one.
Can the seller offer a repair instead of a refund?
The notice sets out the remedy the business has agreed with OPSS. Where the risk is serious, the usual remedy is a refund or replacement. If a repair is offered and you do not want it, ask the seller for the alternative the notice describes.
What is the difference between a recall and a product safety report?
A recall asks people who already own the product to return it. A product safety report records action taken before or at the point of sale, such as an import stopped at the border or a listing removed from an online marketplace, and does not usually involve owners.
Where do these recalls come from?
The Office for Product Safety and Standards publishes every notice on gov.uk, with a feed that updates as notices are added. Kael Tripton pulls the end-user recalls each week and links each one to the official notice.
