LAST REVIEWED: JUNE 2026

The AA offers five breakdown cover tiers: Basic, Essential, Breakdown, Comprehensive and Premier. Each tier adds services on top of the previous. Basic covers roadside assistance only. Essential adds home start. Breakdown adds relay to any UK destination. Comprehensive adds onward travel (hire car or accommodation). Premier adds European cover and enhanced onward travel. The AA attends approximately 10,000 breakdowns per day through a network of over 2,800 directly employed patrols and fixes approximately 80% of breakdowns at the roadside without needing to transport the vehicle to a garage. Choosing the right tier depends primarily on whether home start, relay and European cover are needed for the driver's circumstances.

Why Basic tier should be avoided

The Basic tier covers roadside assistance only. This means if the vehicle breaks down at home, the AA will not attend. A driver who regularly starts journeys from home or who parks at home overnight would have no cover for the most common breakdown location: the home address. Without home start, a dead battery or flat tyre at home requires either a separate call-out (charged at the full non-member rate) or independent resolution.

The price difference between Basic and Essential is typically modest. For most drivers, Essential is the effective minimum sensible tier. Basic is only appropriate for drivers who are away from home for extended periods such as long-distance travellers or van drivers who rarely return to the same home base between shifts.

Relay cover: what it means in practice

Relay cover, included from the Breakdown tier, provides transport of the vehicle and its occupants to any single destination in the UK if the vehicle cannot be repaired at the roadside or at a local garage within a reasonable time. This means a driver who breaks down 200 miles from home can request the AA to arrange transport of the vehicle to their home garage rather than leaving it at an unfamiliar local garage.

Relay is the tier upgrade most likely to make a material difference in a real breakdown scenario. Without relay, a vehicle that cannot be fixed at the roadside is taken to the nearest available garage. If that garage cannot complete the repair quickly, the driver must arrange their own onward travel and return to collect the vehicle later. With relay, the vehicle goes where the driver chooses, avoiding the cost and inconvenience of dealing with a garage far from home.

Onward travel and European cover

Onward travel, included from the Comprehensive tier, provides a hire car or accommodation when a breakdown means the journey cannot continue that day. The AA arranges a hire car for a specified period or hotel accommodation so the driver and occupants are not stranded. The specific limits on hire car duration and accommodation cost are set out in the membership terms.

European cover, included only in the Premier tier, extends breakdown assistance to driving in European countries. Without European cover, a vehicle breakdown on a European road trip requires the driver to arrange and pay for local breakdown assistance independently. European cover is most relevant for drivers who take their own vehicle to Europe; those using hire cars in Europe typically receive breakdown cover through the hire company.

Pricing benchmarks

AA breakdown cover pricing varies by tier, new member vs renewal, and whether the membership is vehicle-based or personal. Vehicle-based cover applies only to a specific registered vehicle. Personal cover applies to the member regardless of which vehicle they are driving. Personal cover is more expensive but covers the member as a passenger in other vehicles and when driving hire cars.

Indicative pricing for new members in 2026: Basic from approximately £30 per year; Essential from approximately £55; Breakdown tier from approximately £75; Comprehensive from approximately £110; Premier from approximately £160. These are indicative ranges; actual pricing depends on the specific configuration and any promotional discounts active at the time of purchase. RAC and Green Flag offer comparable products at similar or lower price points depending on the tier and configuration.

Frequently asked questions

Which AA breakdown tier is best value?

For most drivers who use their car regularly from a home base, the Breakdown tier (the third tier) represents the best balance of cover and cost. It includes roadside assistance, home start and relay to any UK destination. Relay is the feature most likely to matter in a real breakdown scenario where the vehicle cannot be fixed locally. The Comprehensive tier adds onward travel which is valuable for long-distance drivers. Premier adds European cover for those who drive to Europe.

What is the difference between vehicle and personal AA cover?

Vehicle-based AA cover applies only to the specific vehicle registered on the membership. If the member drives another vehicle and breaks down, they are not covered. Personal cover applies to the member as a driver or passenger in any private vehicle, including hire cars and other people's cars. Personal cover costs more but provides broader protection for members who regularly drive multiple vehicles or travel as a passenger.

Does AA breakdown cover work for electric vehicles?

Yes. AA breakdown cover applies to electric vehicles in the same way as petrol and diesel vehicles. The AA has invested in EV-specific equipment and training, including mobile charging capability to provide a limited charge at the roadside to allow the vehicle to reach a charging point. EV breakdown cover has some limitations relative to conventional vehicles, particularly in recovery situations where the battery is fully depleted and the vehicle cannot be driven. The AA publishes specific EV breakdown guidance on its website.

Can I join the AA after breaking down?

The AA accepts new members who have already broken down but applies a call-out charge for assistance in the first 24 hours of membership. This charge is in addition to the membership fee and reflects the fact that the member joined specifically because they needed immediate assistance rather than as a precautionary membership. The call-out charge is disclosed when joining in these circumstances.
