What is an Export Health Certificate?
Anyone exporting animals or animal products from the UK to the EU or other countries must obtain an Export Health Certificate (EHC) signed by an APHA-registered Official Veterinarian (OV). The certificate confirms the consignment meets the health requirements of the destination country.
EHCs cover a wide range of exports: dogs, cats and other companion animals travelling abroad; livestock including cattle, sheep, horses and poultry; and products of animal origin (POAO) such as meat, dairy, fish, eggs and composite foods. Animal by-products (ABPs) including hides, skins, animal feed and laboratory materials also require certification.
Not every veterinary surgeon qualifies to sign EHCs. Certifiers must hold an Official Veterinarian (OV) qualification from the APHA and must be registered to use the EHC Online system. Always confirm with any certifier listed here that they are currently registered before making a booking.
Do I need an EHC to take my pet abroad?
Pet owners travelling to EU countries need an Animal Health Certificate (AHC) rather than a full EHC. An AHC is valid for a single trip of up to four months. The certifier must examine your pet within ten days of travel. For non-EU destinations, an EHC is required instead.
For Australia, your certifier must hold OV66 authorisation, which allows a reduced quarantine period. Certifiers with OV66 status are noted in the listings below. Bookings for Australia exports require early planning as OV66 examinations involve specific timelines set by Australian authorities.
Pet owners should also check pet insurance that covers travel abroad, and if relocating to the EU, review EU Settled Status and UK visa requirements for the destination country.

Frequently asked questions
How do I know if a vet is an APHA-registered Official Veterinarian?
Ask the certifier directly whether they hold an OV qualification and are registered to use the EHC Online system. You can also contact APHA directly via GOV.UK to verify registration. Not every vet is an OV -- only those who have completed the relevant APHA training and hold the correct panels for your type of export.
What is the difference between an EHC and an AHC?
An Animal Health Certificate (AHC) is specifically for pet travel to EU countries and must be issued within ten days of travel. An Export Health Certificate (EHC) covers a broader range of exports including non-EU destinations, food products, livestock and commercial consignments. Some certifiers issue both; others specialise in one or the other.
What is OV66 authorisation?
OV66 is a specific APHA authorisation that allows an Official Veterinarian to carry out the identity verification check required for dogs and cats travelling to Australia under the reduced quarantine pathway. Without OV66, your pet must complete the standard longer quarantine period on arrival in Australia. Certifiers with OV66 status are indicated in the listings above.
How long does it take to get an EHC?
Timelines vary by destination and type of export. For companion animal travel to the EU, the AHC must be issued within ten days of the travel date. For commercial food product exports, lead times depend on the certifier's availability and the destination country's requirements. For Australia, specific pre-export testing and timing windows apply -- contact your chosen OV66-authorised certifier well in advance.

What does POAO mean?
POAO stands for Products of Animal Origin. This covers food products derived from animals including meat, dairy, fish, eggs, shellfish, gelatin and composite foods containing animal-derived ingredients. Exporting any POAO from the UK requires an EHC signed by an APHA-registered Official Veterinarian.
What are ABPs?
ABPs are Animal By-Products -- materials derived from animals that are not intended for human consumption. Examples include hides, skins, wool, feathers, laboratory materials, pet food and animal feed. ABP exports also require EHC certification from a registered OV.
