Each care home listed is registered with and rated by the Care Quality Commission (CQC), the independent regulator of health and social care in England. CQC inspects every registered care home against five domains: Safe, Effective, Caring, Responsive and Well-led. The overall rating reflects performance across all five.

What does a CQC rating mean?

The Care Quality Commission (CQC) rates every registered care home in England across five domains: Safe, Effective, Caring, Responsive and Well-led. Each domain receives its own rating, and an overall rating is then assigned. The four possible overall ratings are Outstanding, Good, Requires Improvement and Inadequate. A home rated Inadequate is placed in special measures and faces urgent regulatory action.

How often does CQC inspect care homes?

CQC risk-rates all providers and inspects accordingly. Homes rated Good or Outstanding are typically inspected every two to three years unless concerns are raised. Homes rated Requires Improvement are re-inspected sooner, usually within a year. Homes rated Inadequate face immediate regulatory action and are re-inspected within six months.

What is the difference between residential and nursing care?

Residential care homes provide accommodation, meals and personal care support (help with washing, dressing, mobility). They do not provide medical or clinical nursing care. Nursing care homes have qualified nurses on site around the clock and can manage complex medical needs, wounds, catheters, PEG feeding and palliative care. Dementia care may be provided in either setting depending on the stage and needs of the individual.

How much does a care home cost in 2026?

Care home fees vary significantly by location and type of care. Average residential care fees in England are approximately £42,000 per year. Nursing care averages approximately £56,000 per year. London and the South East are significantly more expensive. Local authorities fund care for those below the capital threshold of £23,250, subject to a means test. Those above the threshold self-fund.
