Cold weather payments are automatic £25 payments made to eligible benefit claimants for each consecutive 7-day period during which the average temperature in their area is recorded at or forecast to be 0°C or below. They are completely separate from the Winter Fuel Payment and the Warm Home Discount. Here is who qualifies, when payments are made and how the scheme works in 2026.

How the Cold Weather Payment Is Triggered

The payment is triggered by official weather station data, not by your local conditions. The Met Office records average daily temperatures at designated weather stations across the UK. If the mean temperature at your designated local weather station is 0°C or below for 7 consecutive days, everyone in that postcode area who qualifies receives £25 automatically.
StepWhat happens
1. Temperature measuredMet Office records average daily temperature at your local designated weather station
2. Trigger confirmedIf mean temperature is 0°C or below for 7 consecutive days, the DWP is notified
3. Qualifying period identifiedThe specific 7-day period is recorded and a payment is triggered for each eligible claimant in that postcode
4. Automatic payment£25 is paid directly into the same bank account as your qualifying benefit — usually within 14 days
5. NotificationYou may receive a letter, text or email from DWP confirming the payment
