Superdrug has removed Ahava skincare products from its stores and website. The decision follows ongoing consumer and campaign pressure related to Ahava's sourcing of minerals from the Dead Sea.
## Why is Ahava controversial? Ahava is an Israeli cosmetics brand that manufactures products using minerals extracted from the Dead Sea. Its primary production facility is located in Mitzpe Shalem, an Israeli settlement in the West Bank. The occupied West Bank is not recognised as part of Israel under international law, and the United Nations considers Israeli settlements there to be in violation of international law. Campaign groups have long called on UK retailers to stop stocking Ahava products on these grounds. The UK government's position is that Israeli settlements in the West Bank are illegal under international law. ## What has Superdrug said? Superdrug confirmed it had removed Ahava products from sale. The company had previously stocked the brand across its store network and online. ## Your consumer rights if you want to return Ahava products If you purchased Ahava products from Superdrug and wish to return them following this news:
- Products bought in-store: retailers are not legally required to accept returns of non-faulty goods, but many do as a goodwill policy - check Superdrug's current returns policy
- Products bought online: under the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013, you have 14 days from delivery to cancel an order and return goods, and a further 14 days to return them
- Products that are faulty or not as described: full rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 apply regardless of when purchased
- Superdrug customer service: 0345 671 0709
Retailers removing a product from sale for ethical or commercial reasons does not in itself create a legal right to return products that were purchased before the removal and are not faulty.
