KEY FIGURES

The Scale of UK Public Procurement

The UK public sector awards hundreds of thousands of contracts each year. This analysis covers 2,228 awarded notices published on the government's Contracts Finder service, representing GBP 16.09 billion in contract value. The median contract value is GBP 104,880 - meaning half of all awarded contracts are worth less than GBP 105,000.

That figure matters. It means the majority of government contracts are accessible to small and medium-sized businesses, not just the large consultancies and construction firms that dominate headline figures.

Where the Money Goes

Construction accounts for the largest share of total spend. The 98 construction contracts in this dataset carry a combined value of GBP 10.06 billion - 62.5 percent of all contract spend analysed. By contract volume the picture is different: taxi and passenger transport services account for 145 contracts - more than any other category - awarded by 38 different buyers across England.

Suppliers with Overdue Accounts Still Winning Public Contracts

Cross-referencing awarded suppliers against Companies House filing records identifies 15 suppliers whose accounts were recorded as overdue at the time of contract award. Overdue accounts do not necessarily indicate financial distress - they can be overdue for administrative reasons - but contracting authorities are required to assess supplier financial standing under the Public Contracts Regulations 2015.
