A speed awareness course is an alternative to a fixed penalty notice (FPN) for minor speeding offences. Complete it and you avoid the £100 fine and 3 penalty points. The course takes around half a day and costs £80–100. Here is everything you need to know about eligibility, what happens on the day and how it affects your car insurance in 2026.
Verdict 2026
Cost: £80–£100  |  Duration: half a day (3–4 hours)  |  Available: minor speeding only (typically up to 10% + 9mph over limit)  |  Avoids: £100 fine + 3 penalty points  |  Frequency: not more than once in 3 years

Who Is Eligible for a Speed Awareness Course?

Speed awareness courses are offered at the discretion of the relevant police force. Eligibility typically requires:
  • Speed was in Band A — low range (e.g. 31–40mph in a 30 zone)
  • No previous speed awareness course in the last 3 years
  • The offence occurred in England or Wales (schemes also available in Scotland and Northern Ireland)
  • You accept the offer — it cannot be forced upon you
  • You pay the course fee upfront when booking
Not eligible if: Your speed was significantly over the limit (Band B or C), you have attended a speed awareness course within the last 3 years, or you were caught in a school zone or construction zone at certain speeds.

What Happens on a Speed Awareness Course?

Courses are run by NDORS (National Driver Offender Retraining Scheme) providers and last around 3–4 hours. Most are now available online as well as in-person. Content covers:
  • Why speed limits exist and how they relate to stopping distances
  • How speed affects accident severity — the physics of crashes
  • Reading the road, hazard perception and anticipation
  • Common reasons drivers exceed limits without realising
  • Personal reflection on your own driving habits
There is no test at the end. Attendance and engagement are all that is required. Most participants find them genuinely useful, particularly for highway awareness.

Does a Speed Awareness Course Affect Car Insurance?

This is the key question and the answer is nuanced:
What it affectsDetail
DVLA recordCourse does NOT appear on your DVLA driving record — no endorsement
Penalty pointsNo points added — clean licence maintained
Insurance declarationSome insurers ask if you have been offered a speed awareness course; others only ask about convictions and points
Premium impactIf the insurer asks and you declare, a small premium increase is possible on some policies; on others, no impact at all
Best approachCheck your insurer’s application questions carefully; declare if they ask about courses specifically
Important: A speed awareness course is not a conviction and does not add points. However, if your insurer specifically asks “have you been offered or attended a speed awareness course?” you must answer honestly. Not all insurers ask this.

Online vs In-Person Speed Awareness Courses

Online (video call)3–4 hours£80–£100Widely available; convenient
In-person3–4 hours£80–£100Classroom setting; some prefer this format

Verdict 2026
A speed awareness course costs £80–100, takes half a day and avoids a £100 fine and 3 penalty points. It does not appear on your DVLA record and you cannot attend more than once every 3 years. Some insurers ask if you have attended a course — check your policy’s application questions and declare honestly. Most drivers find them genuinely informative.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a speed awareness course go on your driving licence?
No. A speed awareness course does not appear on your DVLA driving record and does not add any penalty points. It is not a conviction. However, some insurers ask specifically about courses attended.
