The English language requirement applies to a significant range of UK visa routes. It is designed to ensure that applicants can integrate into the workplace and community, and for family visas, that they can participate in daily life without language-related isolation.

Which UK Visas Require an English Test

Visa routes with an English language requirement: Skilled Worker Visa (CEFR B1 minimum), Health and Care Worker Visa (CEFR B1 minimum), Global Talent Visa (no formal test required but strong English assumed), Student Visa (provider sets the minimum, typically B2), Graduate Visa (no separate test, English already demonstrated at degree level), UK Family Visa spouse/partner route (CEFR A1 for entry, A2 for further leave, B1 for settlement), Innovator Founder Visa (CEFR B2 minimum), Scale-up Visa (CEFR B1 minimum). Visa routes that do not require an English language test: Standard Visitor Visa, short-term visas (under 6 months), transit visas, Youth Mobility Scheme (Tier 5).

What Is a SELT

A Secure English Language Test (SELT) is an approved English language test specifically designed for UK visa and immigration purposes. Not all English language qualifications count; only those taken at a UKVI-approved test centre and meeting the specific secure testing requirements. The UKVI approves a limited list of SELT providers. As of 2026, the approved SELT providers are IELTS for UKVI (Academic and General Training), Trinity College London SELT (ISE and GESE), LanguageCert International ESOL SELT, Pearson PTE Academic UKVI, and PSI Services. Standard IELTS taken outside a UKVI-approved centre is not accepted for most UK visa routes.

CEFR Levels Explained

The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) is the international standard used to describe English language ability. UK visa requirements reference CEFR levels rather than test-specific scores. A1 is Basic user (approximately IELTS for UKVI 4.0 overall). A2 is Elementary (4.0 to 4.5 overall). B1 is Intermediate (5.5 overall, 4.0 in each component). B2 is Upper intermediate (6.5 overall). C1 is Advanced (7.5 overall). The exact minimum score for each component (listening, reading, writing, speaking) matters as much as the overall score.

English Language Requirements by Visa Route

Skilled Worker Visa: minimum CEFR B1 in all four components; equivalent IELTS for UKVI 5.5 overall with no component below 5.5, or 4.0 in each component depending on the specific scoring table; alternative routes include a degree taught in English or national of an exempt country.

Student Visa: minimum level set by the licensed sponsor (education provider), typically B2 for degree-level courses; the student's CAS specifies the required level; approved tests include IELTS for UKVI Academic, PTE Academic UKVI, and others accepted by the specific institution.

UK Family Visa (Spouse/Partner Route): entry clearance CEFR A1 minimum, further leave to remain CEFR A2 minimum, ILR CEFR B1 minimum. Exemptions exist for nationals of exempt countries and for those aged 65 or over. Innovator Founder Visa: CEFR B2 in all four components.

Nationality Exemptions

Nationals of the following countries are exempt from the English language test requirement: Antigua and Barbuda, Australia, The Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Canada, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, Malta, New Zealand, St Kitts and Nevis, St Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, United States of America. Nationals of these countries must still provide their passport as proof of nationality but no SELT result is required. British nationals and Irish nationals are exempt from the requirement entirely by virtue of citizenship.

The exemption applies to nationality only, not to where a person was born or raised. A Pakistani national who has lived in Australia for 20 years must still satisfy the English language requirement using their Pakistani passport, unless they have Australian citizenship.

Academic Qualifications as an Alternative

In addition to SELT results, certain academic qualifications can satisfy the English language requirement without a separate test. A bachelor's degree, master's degree, or PhD taught and assessed entirely in English from a recognised institution can satisfy the requirement. For degrees from outside the UK, an ENIC (formerly UK NARIC) statement of comparability may be required to confirm equivalence. The degree certificate alone is not sufficient; it must be accompanied by either a transcript confirming the language of instruction or an official letter from the institution.

How Long Are SELT Results Valid

SELT results are valid for two years from the test date for UK visa purposes. An applicant who passed an IELTS for UKVI test more than two years ago must retest, even if the score was well above the required minimum. This two-year validity period applies at the date the visa application is submitted, not the date the visa is granted or the date of travel.

What Happens If the Test Is Failed

If the test result does not meet the minimum required level, the visa application will be refused on English language grounds. The refusal letter will cite the specific requirement that was not met. Options at that stage: retest (most SELT providers allow retesting after a set waiting period, typically 24 to 48 hours for some tests, up to 5 days for others); request a re-mark or appeal through the test provider; check alternative qualification routes; reapply with a valid test result.

Disclaimer: English language requirements and approved test providers are set by the Home Office and subject to change. Always verify current requirements and the approved provider list on GOV.UK before booking a test or submitting a visa application.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is standard IELTS accepted for a UK visa?

Standard IELTS taken at a non-UKVI-approved centre is not accepted for most UK visa routes. The test must be the IELTS for UKVI variant taken at a designated UKVI-approved test centre.

What is the minimum IELTS score for a Skilled Worker Visa?

The minimum is CEFR B1, which broadly corresponds to an IELTS for UKVI score of 5.5 overall with no individual component below the B1 equivalent. The exact mapping varies slightly by provider.

How long is an English language test valid?

SELT results are valid for two years from the test date for UK visa purposes. The result must still be within the two-year validity period on the date the visa application is submitted.

Do American or Australian nationals need an English test?

No. Nationals of majority English-speaking countries including the USA, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and several Caribbean nations are exempt from the English language requirement. Passport proof of nationality is still required.

Can I use a university degree instead of a test?

Yes, if the degree was taught and assessed entirely in English and is equivalent to at least a UK bachelor's degree. A NARIC/ENIC statement of comparability may be required for degrees from outside the UK.
