If you have just moved into a new property, inherited a house, or simply cannot remember who supplies your gas or electricity, finding out is straightforward. There are several quick methods to identify your current energy supplier — some taking less than 60 seconds.
Key facts April 2026
Electricity supplier: call 105 (free) or check meter for MPAN number  |  Gas supplier: call 0870 608 1524 or check meter for MPRN number  |  Fastest method: check a recent bill or your meter  |  New home: Meter Point Administration Service (MPAS)

5 Ways to Find Your Energy Supplier UK

  1. Check your bills or emails: The quickest method. Your supplier’s name and logo will be on any energy bill, direct debit confirmation or welcome email. Search your email for “energy”, “electricity” or “gas”.
  2. Check your bank statement: Your direct debit will show the supplier name. Look for monthly payments to energy companies.
  3. Call 105 (electricity): The free UK number for electricity network operators. They can tell you who supplies electricity to your address.
  4. Use your MPAN or MPRN number: These unique meter reference numbers identify your supply point and the associated supplier. Your meter or fusebox should have these numbers.
  5. Contact MPAS (for gas) or your local DNO (for electricity): The Meter Point Administration Service holds records of which supplier is registered at each gas meter. Your Distribution Network Operator (DNO) holds electricity records.

How to Find Your Electricity Supplier

Your MPAN (Meter Point Administration Number) is a 21-digit number printed on your electricity meter or electricity bill. The first few digits identify the Distribution Network Operator (DNO) region — not the supplier. The supplier is held in a national database.

How to Find Your Gas Supplier

Your MPRN (Meter Point Reference Number) is an 8–10 digit number found on your gas meter or bill. Unlike electricity, there is one gas transporter (National Grid Gas Distribution and its successors) so the lookup process is slightly different.

I’ve Just Moved In — Who Is the Current Supplier?

When you move into a property, you automatically become a customer of whoever was supplying the previous occupant. You are not locked in — you can switch immediately. However, to do so you need to know who the current supplier is.
  • Take meter readings on moving-in day — photograph both the gas and electricity meters
  • Contact the supplier the estate agent or previous tenant names — this is often on paperwork left by the seller or landlord
  • Use findmysupplier.energy with your postcode if you cannot identify the supplier any other way
  • The current supplier must supply you until you switch — they cannot cut you off simply because you are a new occupant
  • If the previous occupant was in debt, that debt does not transfer to you — you are not responsible for their arrears

What If My Gas or Electricity Has Been Disconnected?

If you move into a property and the gas or electricity has been disconnected (due to the previous occupant’s debt or a period of empty property), contact the network operator directly:
  • Electricity disconnection: Call your local Distribution Network Operator (DNO). Find yours at energynetworks.org/operating-the-networks/whos-my-network-operator.
  • Gas disconnection: Contact National Gas Transmission or your local gas distribution network.
  • If you are in a vulnerable situation (elderly, disabled, children in the property), tell the network operator — they have Priority Services Register obligations to restore supply quickly.
Key facts April 2026
The fastest way to find your energy supplier is via findmysupplier.energy or by calling 105 (electricity). Your MPAN (electricity) and MPRN (gas) numbers uniquely identify your supply point. If you have just moved in, take meter readings immediately and contact the existing supplier to set up an account, then switch once you know your usage pattern.
