TL;DR: All children aged 5 to 15 in England can travel free on any local bus service throughout August 2026. The scheme runs alongside a temporary VAT cut on family day out activities from 25 June to 1 September.
KEY FACTS
  • Free local bus travel for children aged 5 to 15 throughout August 2026
  • Applies to England only -- transport is devolved in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland
  • London is excluded as it already operates the Zip Card free travel scheme for this age group
  • Applies to local bus services -- does not cover coaches, trains, or trams
  • Part of the government's Great British Summer Savings package announced 20 May 2026
  • No application or card required -- children board free on eligible services

Which Children Qualify

The free travel applies to all children aged 5 to 15 in England. There is no means-test, no application process, and no card required. Children under 5 are already entitled to free bus travel in most areas. Children aged 16 and over are not included in this specific scheme, though concessionary fares for older teenagers may apply in some areas under local authority schemes.

London is explicitly excluded. The capital already operates its own Zip Card scheme providing free travel for children aged 5 to 15 across all Transport for London services including buses, the Underground, Overground, and Elizabeth line.

Which Services Are Included

The free travel covers local bus services in England outside London. Local buses are services registered under the Transport Act 1985 that run fixed routes on a scheduled timetable, stopping at defined stops to pick up and set down passengers.

The scheme does not cover long-distance coach services, National Express or similar operators, trains, light rail or tram services, or demand-responsive transport. School buses and private hire vehicles are also not included.

How Children Board Free

Full operational details on how children board without payment -- whether by showing proof of age, by a simple declaration to the driver, or by an automatic system -- will be confirmed in guidance from the Department for Transport ahead of August. Families should check the DfT guidance at gov.uk/transport for the latest information as the scheme launch approaches.

Food Tariff Cuts Running Alongside the Bus Scheme

The free bus travel scheme was announced alongside targeted cuts to agri-food import tariffs on products including biscuits, chocolate, dried fruit and nuts. The tariff cuts are designed to reduce pressure on food prices and are separate from the VAT relief on family activities and children's meals which runs from 25 June to 1 September 2026.

Does the free bus travel apply in Wales and Scotland?

No. Transport policy is devolved in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. The August 2026 free bus travel scheme applies to England only. Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland operate their own concessionary travel schemes under devolved authority. Families in those nations should check their respective transport authority websites for details of any applicable concessions.

Is London included in the free August bus travel?

No. London is excluded from this specific scheme as it already operates the Zip Card free travel scheme for children aged 5 to 15. The Zip Card provides free travel across Transport for London services including all London buses, the Underground, Overground, DLR, Elizabeth line and National Rail services within the TfL zones. Parents of London children should ensure their child has a valid Zip Card registered through the TfL website.

Does the scheme cover trains and trams?

No. The August 2026 free travel applies to local bus services only. Trains, trams, light rail and coaches are not included. National Rail services, Avanti, LNER and other train operators are not part of this scheme.

Do children need to show proof of age?

The boarding process for the August scheme has not been fully confirmed in published guidance at the time of writing. The Department for Transport is expected to publish operational guidance before August. Families should check gov.uk/transport for updates as the scheme approaches.

What happens after August -- does the free travel continue?

The scheme runs throughout August 2026 only. From 1 September, standard fares apply. The scheme is described as a temporary summer measure as part of the Great British Summer Savings package. No announcement has been made about extending the scheme beyond August 2026.
