TRAVEL DISRUPTION

Key facts

  • The Portuguese national general strike on 3 June 2026 is supported by the Confederação Geral dos Trabalhadores Portugueses (CGTP).
  • Jet2 has stated all flights are currently scheduled to operate but warned of longer than normal queues and potential disruption to flights.
  • EU261 applies to flights from EU airports and to EU on EU airlines. UK-to-Portugal Jet2 flights are EU airline-operated.
  • A general strike by a third party is typically classed as 'extraordinary circumstances' under EU261, so cash compensation is generally not payable.
  • Right to refund, rebooking, meals and accommodation under EU261 applies regardless of cause.

What Jet2 has actually said

Jet2 has published a travel alert on its 'Latest Travel Information' page stating: 'We are aware and are monitoring a National General Strike that has been called in Portugal on 3 June 2026, supported by the Confederation of Portuguese Unions. As a result of this strike action, some transport services in destination and a number of key services at the airport may be disrupted, this could cause longer than normal queues and disruption to flights on this day.'

The airline added that all flights are currently scheduled to operate as normal and that operations teams are working to minimise disruption. Passengers are advised to check the airline's flight checker tool ahead of travel.

EU261 passenger rights in a Portuguese strike

For a Jet2 flight to or from Portugal:

If the flight is cancelled: The passenger has the right to choose a full refund of the ticket price (unused portion) or rebooking on the next reasonable alternative.

If the flight is delayed: The right to care under Article 9 of EU261 applies once the delay reaches the relevant threshold (2 hours for flights under 1,500 km; 3 hours for flights over 1,500 km within the EU; 4 hours for other flights). The airline must provide meals, refreshments and, if needed, accommodation.

If the cause is a third-party strike: Cash compensation under Article 7 (€250 to €600 depending on distance) is typically not payable because a third-party strike is 'extraordinary circumstances' beyond the airline's control. This contrasts with strikes by the airline's own staff, where compensation may apply.

Where the airline does not provide care directly during a long delay, keep receipts for meals and accommodation. These costs are claimable from the airline afterwards.

Travel insurance and what to do now

UK travel insurance policies typically cover unforeseen strikes. The Portuguese strike was publicly announced before 3 June, so cover depends on the policy purchase date:

Policy bought before the strike was announced: The strike is unforeseen at the time of purchase. Standard cover applies, subject to policy wording.

Policy bought after the strike was announced: The strike is foreseen at the time of purchase. Most policies exclude foreseen events.

Practical steps for passengers travelling on or around 3 June 2026: check the Jet2 flight checker the evening before travel; arrive at the airport with at least the recommended margin (Jet2 currently recommends 2 hours for short-haul); use the airline app for real-time updates; keep all receipts if disruption occurs; and contact the airline first before claiming on insurance.

Advisory: If a flight is cancelled, the passenger can choose between refund and rebooking. Once a refund is taken, the passenger forfeits the right to be re-routed on a later flight. Decide which option fits travel needs before accepting the cancellation offer.

Frequently asked questions

Will my Jet2 flight to Portugal be cancelled on 3 June 2026?

Jet2 has stated all flights are currently scheduled to operate but warned of potential disruption. Check the Jet2 flight checker tool for live updates closer to departure.

Do I get compensation if a strike cancels my flight?

Cash compensation under EU261 is typically not payable when the cancellation is caused by a third-party strike (extraordinary circumstances). Refund, rebooking, meals and accommodation rights all still apply.

Does my travel insurance cover the Portuguese strike?

If the policy was purchased before the strike was publicly announced, standard disruption cover usually applies. If purchased afterwards, most policies exclude the event as foreseen at the time of purchase.

How early should I arrive at the airport on 3 June?

Jet2 recommends arriving at least 2 hours before short-haul departures. During expected disruption, arriving earlier than usual reduces the risk of missing a flight due to security and check-in queues.
