Why Lloyds is closing so many branches
Lloyds Banking Group attributes the closures to a sustained fall in the number of customers visiting physical branches, alongside a continuing shift toward mobile and online banking. The group, which comprises Lloyds Bank, Halifax and Bank of Scotland, says it now has more than 10 million app users and that the majority of everyday transactions are completed digitally.
In individual closing branch review documents, the group states that branches are being used considerably less as customers manage their money through phones, online banking and telephone services. The reviews, published under Financial Conduct Authority guidance, must explain the rationale and identify alternatives before a closure can proceed.
Lloyds is not alone. Between January 2015 and January 2026, an estimated 6,693 bank branches shut across the UK. Santander, Barclays, NatWest and HSBC have all made significant reductions to their branch networks over the same period.
Scale of the 2026 and 2027 closures
The current wave began in January 2026, with 17 branches including sites in Alfreton, Penzance and Lewes among the first to shut. Further closures followed in March 2026, and a summer 2026 cluster includes consolidations across Birmingham and London.
The group announced an additional 79 closures in June 2026, taking the overall 2026 to 2027 total to 245. The breakdown by brand: 125 Lloyds Bank branches, 94 Halifax branches, and 28 Bank of Scotland branches. Once the announced programme is complete, Lloyds Banking Group is expected to operate approximately 610 UK branches.
How to find out if your branch is closing
Lloyds Bank and Halifax each maintain a branch closures page on their respective websites, listing affected branches alphabetically alongside two closing branch review documents. Part 1 explains how the closure decision was reached. Part 2 is published at least two weeks before the closure date and summarises feedback gathered from the local community.
Customers are notified directly by the bank with at least 12 weeks' notice before their branch closes, in line with FCA guidance on branch closure communications.
Alternatives if your local branch closes
The Post Office is the most widely available alternative for everyday banking. Customers of Lloyds, Halifax and Bank of Scotland can withdraw and deposit cash, check balances and pay in cheques at any of the UK's 11,000-plus Post Office locations. The Post Office secured a new five-year partnership covering cash access services from January 2026 to December 2030.
Banking Hubs are shared spaces, operated by Post Office but separate from its main branches, where customers of multiple banks can access counter services and face-to-face support. As of June 2026, 237 Banking Hubs are open across the UK.
Community Bankers are deployed by both Lloyds and Halifax in areas where a branch has closed. These are bank staff who visit a local venue on a regular schedule. They can assist with account enquiries but do not handle cash or counter transactions.
Co-servicing allows customers of any of the group's three brands to use branches across all three for everyday transactions including cash deposits, withdrawals and cheque payments.
Considering switching bank?
If a local branch closing prompts a review of your banking arrangements, the Current Account Switch Service allows a full switch, including redirecting payments and direct debits, within seven working days. HSBC has stated it does not plan to close further branches until at least 2027. Nationwide Building Society has also made commitments to maintain its branch presence through 2026.
