★ KEY TAKEAWAY

The UK Global Talent visa requires endorsement from a designated body covering the applicant's field. Since February 2023, UK Research and Innovation has endorsed Digital Technology applicants following Tech Nation's closure of its visa endorsement operation in March 2023. Arts, science, research, and humanities each have their own endorsing body.

The UK Global Talent visa sits at the apex of the work-route hierarchy for applicants who can evidence exceptional achievement or exceptional promise in a qualifying field, and it operates through a two-stage process where a designated endorsing body first certifies the applicant's standing and the Home Office then grants the visa on the strength of that endorsement. The endorsing body landscape reconfigured materially in 2023: Tech Nation closed its Global Talent visa endorsement function in March 2023 following the loss of its Digital Growth contract, and UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) began endorsing Digital Technology applicants from February 2023 under a new arrangement with the Home Office. The Royal Society continues to endorse natural sciences and medical research, the British Academy handles humanities and social sciences, the Royal Academy of Engineering covers engineering, and Arts Council England handles creative and cultural fields. Prize-winner exemptions for Nobel, Turing, Oscar-level awards bypass the endorsement stage entirely, reflecting the route's purpose as a global talent attraction tool.

How did Tech Nation and UKRI change?

Tech Nation, the UK government-backed body that had endorsed Digital Technology applicants for the Global Talent visa since 2014, announced on 18 January 2023 that it would close following the loss of its Digital Growth contract. UKRI, the UK's national research and innovation funding body, began endorsing Digital Technology applicants in February 2023, and Tech Nation wound down its visa endorsement operation in March 2023, per announcements published on gov.uk and by UKRI.

UKRI continues to operate the Digital Technology endorsement stream under substantially the same criteria Tech Nation had used, with published guidance on ukri.org covering both Exceptional Talent and Exceptional Promise tiers. Applicants who held Tech Nation endorsements before March 2023 retained those endorsements as valid, and their visa applications proceeded without re-endorsement.

What are Exceptional Talent and Exceptional Promise?

Exceptional Talent is the tier for applicants already recognised as leaders in their field, with evidence of sustained international or national distinction. Exceptional Promise is the tier for earlier-career applicants who have demonstrated potential to become a leader in the coming years, typically with 5 to 7 years of relevant experience and a concrete trajectory of recognition.

Each endorsing body publishes its own criteria for the two tiers, with weight on published work, prizes, funding, editorial roles, and peer recognition for research fields; on creative work, critical reception, and industry recognition for arts; and on technical contribution, equity ownership, and product impact for Digital Technology. Endorsement decisions take 3 to 8 weeks depending on body and volume, and are independent of UKVI processing.

How do prize-winner exemptions work?

Holders of certain prestige awards bypass endorsement and apply directly for a visa, per paragraph GT 5 of Appendix Global Talent on gov.uk. Qualifying awards include the Nobel Prize, the Turing Award, the Fields Medal, the Booker Prize, the Pulitzer Prize, the Academy Awards, the Grammy Awards, the Emmy Awards, and a small additional list of international awards specified in the Rules.

The exemption list is narrow and specific; honorary degrees, professional association fellowships, and national-level prizes not on the listed awards are not exempt and still require standard endorsement. Prize-winner applications proceed directly to visa stage at the £766 fee, skipping the separate endorsement application.

How does the fast-track route work?

Fast-track endorsement is available to applicants who hold specific grants, fellowships, or professorial positions, per the endorsing body prospectuses on gov.uk. Examples include holders of ERC grants, Royal Society University Research Fellowships, UKRI Future Leaders Fellowships, and specified named-chair academic appointments. The fast-track route bypasses the substantive endorsement review and processes in under 3 weeks.

Fast-track pathways vary by endorsing body: the Royal Society publishes a list of qualifying fellowships; UKRI publishes criteria for Digital Technology fast-track including specific senior roles at high-growth companies; Arts Council England uses named production or commission routes. Fast-track endorsement produces an Exceptional Talent tier outcome rather than Exceptional Promise, which shortens ILR to 3 years.

How long is Global Talent leave?

Applicants can be granted between 1 and 5 years of leave on the Global Talent visa, with most applicants opting for the maximum 5-year grant at initial application, per paragraph GT 8 of Appendix Global Talent. The length of leave is chosen by the applicant and does not affect the endorsement tier.

Settlement is available after 3 years of continuous residence for Exceptional Talent, and after 5 years for Exceptional Promise, subject to the absence rules in Appendix Continuous Residence and the Life in the UK plus B1 English requirements that apply to all ILR applications. Global Talent holders can change employer, work for multiple employers, and run their own businesses without Home Office notification.

Each endorsing body publishes a detailed criteria prospectus on its own website, cross-linked from gov.uk/global-talent. Applicants should study the field-specific prospectus closely before applying, as criteria differ materially in weight given to different forms of evidence.

★ EDITOR'S VERDICT

The Global Talent route has stabilised since Tech Nation's exit in March 2023 and UKRI's Digital Technology takeover from February 2023. Applicants should identify the correct endorsing body, read the field-specific prospectus carefully, assemble evidence against the published criteria in the order the body sets out, and budget 3 to 8 weeks for endorsement plus 3 to 8 weeks for visa decision. Exceptional Talent wins 3-year ILR; Exceptional Promise wins 5-year ILR; prize-winners bypass endorsement. The route rewards preparation and specificity of evidence more than volume.

Frequently asked questions

Is Tech Nation still endorsing visa applicants?

No. Tech Nation closed its visa endorsement operation in March 2023 following the loss of its Digital Growth contract. UKRI has endorsed Digital Technology applicants since February 2023.

Do I need a job offer for Global Talent?

No. The Global Talent visa is unsponsored. Holders can work for any employer, be self-employed, or run a business, without a job offer, Certificate of Sponsorship, or salary threshold.

Can I switch from Skilled Worker to Global Talent?

Yes, provided endorsement is obtained. In-country switching is available, allowing applicants to drop the sponsor tie. Previous Skilled Worker time does not count towards Global Talent ILR.

What is the endorsement success rate?

Varies by body and by tier. Published figures are limited. Historical data from Tech Nation and Royal Society releases suggest Exceptional Promise success rates exceed Exceptional Talent success rates, reflecting the higher bar for the latter tier.

Can I add dependants to Global Talent?

Yes. Spouses, partners, and children under 18 can be added as dependants at application or later, paying the same £766 fee each and standard IHS rates.

Does Global Talent lead to British citizenship?

Yes, via ILR. Exceptional Talent holders can apply for ILR at 3 years, Exceptional Promise at 5 years, and then British citizenship 12 months after ILR (or immediately for spouses of British citizens).

Is there a salary requirement?

No. Global Talent has no salary requirement, no minimum earning threshold, and no employer sponsorship. Holders can earn any amount, including during research fellowships or early-stage ventures.
