Quick answer: glasgow.gov.uk hosts the official Glasgow City Council Tax portal, including online payment, account login, the Council Tax Reduction form and the moving-in or out forms.

glasgow.gov.uk is the official Glasgow City Council website and is the right place to handle most Council Tax tasks online. This guide sets out what you can do through the site, how to register for a Council Tax account, and which tasks still need a phone call or letter.

Anything you do through glasgow.gov.uk is treated the same as if you had phoned or written, but is normally faster because it feeds directly into the council's back-office system. The site is the only source of the current online forms; older links from other sites may have moved or expired.

BandProperty Value (1991 Scottish)Ratio to Band D

B£27,001 to £35,000280/360
C£35,001 to £45,000320/360
D£45,001 to £58,000360/360
E£58,001 to £80,000473/360
F£80,001 to £106,000585/360
G£106,001 to £212,000705/360

Scottish band ranges based on 1991 values. The online portal does not change which band applies to your home.

Setting up a Glasgow Council Tax online account

You can pay Council Tax and submit most forms without an account, but a "myaccount" sign-in (the Scottish single sign-on system run by the Improvement Service for Scottish councils) gives you access to your Council Tax balance, payment history and bills in one place.

Sign up at the myaccount page linked from glasgow.gov.uk. You will need to verify your identity (typically with a utility bill, a bank statement or a driving licence) and link your Council Tax account using your reference number (top right of your bill). Once linked, the account shows the current balance, past bills and the schedule of upcoming Direct Debit payments. Paperless billing is also offered: opting in stops the annual paper bill from being posted and replaces it with a PDF in your account.

The same myaccount sign-in works for other Scottish councils, so if you move within Scotland the account follows you. It also unlocks other Glasgow services (such as planning, school admissions and parking permits) under the same sign-in.

If you cannot or do not want to use myaccount, the basic pay-online and form-submission pages remain available without a sign-in. The trade-off is that you cannot see your balance or bill history in one place without signing in.

What you can do through glasgow.gov.uk

The online Council Tax tasks on glasgow.gov.uk include: pay your Council Tax by debit or credit card, set up or amend a Direct Debit, tell the council you have moved in or out, apply for the single person discount, apply for Council Tax Reduction, apply for a student exemption, ask for a 12-instalment payment plan, request a duplicate bill, and ask for a refund of an overpaid balance.

Each form captures the information the council needs and feeds it into the back-office system. Routine requests are normally processed within a few working days.

The site also publishes the year's band-by-band Council Tax charges, the budget book, contact details, and links to the Scottish Assessors Association for banding queries.

Scottish bands A to H in Glasgow

Glasgow uses the Scottish band system based on 1991 values. Band A is up to £27,000; Band H starts at £212,000. The cash amount per band is set by Glasgow City Council each February, using the post-2017 ratios that make Bands E to H proportionally more expensive than under the old 6/9 to 18/9 schedule.

The Glasgow City Assessor (whose website is linked from glasgow.gov.uk) decides bands. You can look up your band on the Scottish Assessors Association portal by entering your postcode.

The online portal does not change which band applies to your home; that is a separate process handled by the Assessor.

Paying Council Tax online through glasgow.gov.uk

The pay-online page on glasgow.gov.uk accepts most debit and credit cards. You will need your Council Tax account reference and the card details. Payments are normally credited within a few working days.

Direct Debit is set up through a separate online form. You choose the payment date (1st, 15th or 28th of the month) and the number of instalments (10 or 12). The first payment is normally taken on the next chosen date after the bank has set up the mandate.

Scottish Water and waste-water charges are included in the Direct Debit, so a single monthly figure covers both Council Tax and water. The bill shows the split.

What still needs a phone call or letter

Some Council Tax tasks still need a phone call or letter: discussing arrears that have already reached a summary warrant, asking for a discretionary reduction beyond the standard Council Tax Reduction scheme, dealing with a deceased estate, and submitting a formal appeal against a discount decision.

Formal correspondence (appeals, written representations) should go by post or recorded delivery to the address on the back of your bill. The phone number for arrears and complex cases is also on the bill and on the contact page of glasgow.gov.uk.

Always take the current phone number from glasgow.gov.uk or the back of your bill, because numbers from older articles or third-party sites can be out of date.
