What Is Trooping the Colour?
Trooping the Colour is the annual ceremony marking the official birthday of the British monarch. Although King Charles III's actual birthday falls on 14 November, the tradition of holding an official summer birthday parade dates back to the reign of Charles II, chosen deliberately to take advantage of better weather. The ceremony has taken place on a Saturday in June every year since 1959.
The event is formally known as the King's Birthday Parade. The term trooping the colour refers to the practice of slowly marching the regiment's flag through the ranks of soldiers so that every soldier could identify it on the battlefield. The colours served as a rallying point during combat and displayed the battle honours of the regiment. This tradition has been observed since the 17th century.
The 2026 parade features The King's Company, 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards trooping their Colour in the presence of His Majesty. Over 1,350 soldiers of the Household Division and the King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery take part, supported by more than 300 musicians from the Massed Bands and Corps of Drums. Around 250 Foot Guards line the processional route along The Mall throughout the morning.

The Ceremonial Route
The King's procession begins at Buckingham Palace, proceeds east along The Mall through St James's Park, and arrives at Horse Guards Parade on Whitehall. The Mall was laid out in its current form in 1911 as part of the Queen Victoria Memorial scheme. After the ceremony, the procession returns along the same route. The route is lined by Foot Guards throughout and is viewable from both sides of The Mall and from St James's Park running alongside.
Road Closures - What to Expect Today
Central London faces extensive road closures throughout the morning and into early afternoon. Affected roads include The Mall, Constitution Hill, Spur Road, Marlborough Road, Horse Guards Road, Whitehall, Birdcage Walk, Parliament Street and approaches to Parliament Square. Bus routes including 11, 211 and C1 face diversions from the early hours - check the TfL app for live diversion maps. Driving into central London is strongly inadvisable today. Parking suspensions apply across Westminster and Kensington and Chelsea, with clamping and removal operations in force. Closures typically begin lifting from around 2:00pm, though Whitehall may remain affected into the afternoon.
Getting There - Public Transport
The nearest operational Underground stations are Westminster (Circle, District, Jubilee), St James's Park (Circle, District) and Victoria (Circle, District, Victoria lines). Green Park (Jubilee, Piccadilly, Victoria) gives direct access to The Mall but will be under heavy pressure once crowds build. Consider arriving via Victoria or Westminster and walking. Oyster cards and contactless payment work normally on all TfL services. Download maps and journey information offline before travelling - mobile signal becomes very patchy along The Mall and at the Victoria Memorial once crowd numbers peak. Airport-style security operates at key entry points: no large bags permitted. Bring water and sun protection as there is minimal shade along the route.
Red Arrows Flypast - Time and Route
The Red Arrows depart RAF Waddington in Lincolnshire at approximately 11:00am and are scheduled to reach Buckingham Palace at 1:00pm, coinciding with the royal family's balcony appearance. After passing over the Palace, the aircraft continue west through Hounslow and Feltham, then north over Windsor and Slough before turning back. The formation is joined by other RAF aircraft for the Palace pass. The Military Airshow website publishes precise timing estimates for each location along the return route for those watching from outside London.
Best Free Viewing Spots
The grandstand at Horse Guards Parade requires a ticket from the annual public ballot, which closed in March 2026. The procession along The Mall and the balcony appearance are entirely free. The Mall provides the primary spectator route with the closest views of the procession. The Palace side of the road offers slightly better sightlines for the outward procession. Arrive before 9:00am to secure a barrier position. St James's Park is open parkland alongside The Mall, accessible without any barrier or ticket, providing a more relaxed alternative though views are partially through trees. The Victoria Memorial area directly outside Buckingham Palace is the prime spot for the 1:00pm balcony appearance and Red Arrows flypast but fills earliest - before 8:00am for a front position. Green Park allows you to hear the 41-gun salute at 11:00am in a quieter environment with easier access.
Watching on TV
BBC One and BBC iPlayer carry the full ceremony live from 10:00am, including the Horse Guards proceedings not visible from public areas. Coverage runs through the trooping, the return procession, the balcony appearance and the RAF flypast. ITV also covers the event with studio analysis. Both BBC iPlayer and ITVX offer full catch-up replay for those who cannot watch live.
The Birthday Honours List 2026
Trooping the Colour coincides each year with the King's Birthday Honours List. The 2026 list was announced on 12 June and recognises close to 1,200 individuals across the UK. Notable recipients this year include Sir Kevin Sinfield, who receives a knighthood for his rugby league career and his fundraising efforts for Motor Neurone Disease research following the illness of his close friend Rob Burrow. Sir Kevin has raised tens of millions of pounds through a series of endurance challenges. Dame Helen Mirren is elevated to Companion of Honour, restricted to a maximum of 65 living members. Six members of England's Euro 2025 Championship-winning squad receive MBEs, including Chloe Kelly and Hannah Hampton. Authors Malorie Blackman and Julia Donaldson also feature.
