What the law requires
Register before the first payday
You must register as an employer with HMRC before the first payday and cannot do it more than two months in advance. PAYE must be reported on or before each payment.

Employers liability insurance
Cover of at least £5 million is required as soon as you employ anyone, with limited exemptions for single director companies. The penalty is up to £2,500 for each day without cover.
